ARBITRATION COURT AWARDS

PRIME MINISTER’S COMMENT. [P&B PKESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, April 19. “One can understand the impatience of people who have been waiting- for years for some redress,” said: the Primo Minister (Mr Savage), commenting this evening oir the dissatisfaction expressed at the annual conference of the Federation of Labour with delays occurring’ in the issue of awards of the Courts' of Arbitration. The conference, which was held' in Wellington last week, decided to bring' the complaint under the notice of the Government, and l to draw attention to s-'-et’orj 37 of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, providing that except in special circumstances, awards are to be issued within a month of the hearing of claims. Mr Savage said originally there was only one Court of Arbitration, and it had got 'hopelessly behind in handling the great volume of work. The Government had then appointed a second Court of Ai'oitration, and he anticipated that the arrears would now be overtaken. “I know something of the people’s sufferings,” Mr Savage added. “Our job is to clean up the arrears as quickly as we can.”
