Farewelling the old and embracing the new, the city was in dignified dress to-day for the ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the new £200,000 Court of Justice, by Loud Galway. In a colourful assemblage, which gathered on the bank of the Avon in front of the present Courts, many national and civic' dignitaries mingled with the public, and the attendance was fully representative of the Crown. Supreme Court Bench, Members of Parliament, churches, magistrates, and legal profession. Nearly three hundred members of the legal profession of New Zealand were present, including seven King's Counsel. Before the arrival of Lord Galway, a procession of Judges arrived. ChiefJustice Myers was followed by Justives Kennedy and Northcroft garbed in their scarlet robes and full bottomed wigs. This was the first occasion the full ceremonial robes of the Supreme Court Bench had been seen in public in Christchurch. At the rear of the procession was Mr. Justice Hunter, of the Second Arbitration Court, who wore the black silk robes of his office.
