EASTER RACING

KUMARA TOTE INCREASE ' _____ RESULTS FROM ALL COURSES Easter racing was continued yesterday, with no less than nine fixtures in different parts of the Dominion. The principal meeting for South Islanders was the opening of the Canterbury Jockey Club s fixture at Riccarton, where Pouty scored a popular and decisive victory in the Great Easter Handicap. Classic races were won by Francis Drake (St- Leger), and Defaulter (Champagne Stakes). West Coast interest centred in the Kumara Club’s annual meeting at Kumara, where there was a large attendance, and the totalisator showed an increase of £7ll|. Totalisator investments throughout the Dominion in the first two days of the Easter carnival, despite the postponement of the Addington Trots on Saturday, reached £395,684, as against £389,634 on the corresponding two days of last year, an increase of £6,050* last year, the investments on the first day of the Metropolitan Trots amounted to £43,746, so that this year’s figures would have shown a considerable advance on last year, had the postponement not been necessary. Auckland showed the remarkable increase of £41,654, while Greymouth, Wairarapa and Feilding were the only clubs to show decreases.

KUMARA RACES. BIG NELSON WINS DOUBLE _ ; I » imJ The Kumara Racing Club was favoured with ideal weather for its annual meeting on the Kumara Racecourse yesterday. There was a large attendance, but poor fields (there were four one-dividend races) spoiled the prospects of a large totalisator turnover. Nevertheless, the machine handled £3,939, as against £3,527/10/at the corresponding meeting last Easter, an increase of £7ll/10/-.

The principal event was won easily by the Kumara-owned Monipere, who was not asked lor his best at any stage. Amount followed up his double success at Greymouth, with an easy victory in the principal sprint event. Big Nelson won both trotting events. In his first race, he won by a narrow margin after coming from the back in the straight, but he went to the front before reaching the straight on his second appearance, and won with a good deal in hand. Dividends were necessarily small, the best being a little over half double figures, though only three first favourites were successful. Times were not fast, the track being yielding, as a consequence of the recent rains.

The presentation of a canteen of cutlery donated by Westland Breweries, Ltd., was made to the owner of Monipere (winner of the Burger Memorial) Mr. W. Stewart, by Mr. Allan Smith (Chairman of Directors of the Company), and a gold-mounted •whip, donated by Mr. G. Schaef. was presented to J. McFarlane, rider of Monipere. by Mr. J. O'Donnell. CHRISTCHURCH, April 18. The Great Easter Handicap did not provide the close contest, suggested by the strong field carded, as after Rebel Mate, Alma, and Janet Gaynor had disputed the lead for the first two furlongs, Ponty went to the front and was never headed, nor was he in any danger of being overhauled. Janet Gaynor was in front, passing the fivefurlong post, from Haughty Winner, Rebel Mate, Alma, and Ponty, and it was then that the last-named, with a fast run, took command. He was followed into the straight by Haughty . Winner, Janet Gaynor, Rebel Mate, Alma, and Dictate. Rebel Mate pass-' cd Haughty Winner one hundred yards from the post, but had no chance of getting up to Ponty, who had more in hand than the length official margin indicated. Dictate finished with a characteristic run, and got to within a neck of Rebel Mate, and would have beaten him in another stride or two. Alma, pulling up, was three lengths away, a length in front of Paper Slipper, Haughty Winner, and Wild Career. Ponty outclassed the field once he went to the front, r.nd had all struggling in the run home. Rebel Mate ran up to his attractive Oamaru form, and was unlucky to strike the winner on his best day. Dictate drew attention to his Great Autumn Handicap prospects by his determined finish i after giving the leaders an appreciable’ break entering the straight. Alma! 'looked likely inside the distance, but weakened badly at a critical. stage.!

•Paper Slipper was the first, to sho-w out, but was; then steadied hi behind the leaders, and turning tor home had drifted back to near the rear. He made a promising forward movei when the run home was commenced, but had too much ground to make up. Brunhild, as expected, failed to act in the going; but Haughty Winner made a. bold showing while he lasted. , Wild Career, who arrived by float from Invercargill on Sunday, ran poorly. Lady Ina, was last away and was never within reach of the leaders. Janet. Gaynor stopped badly in the straight, and was the. last to finish. STUDLEY ROYAL RETURNS. The Sockburn Handicap proved a triumph for the light-weights, all of the well-backed division failing in the ground. The winner, Studley Royal, gave a sterling performance. He was the last to leave the mark, but with

a fast run during the middle stages, he ran up into third place behind Lazybones and Rebel Lad, and followed ] this pair into the straight, with Davolo, Mungatoon and Arctic King handy. Lazybones retired at the distance, and Rebel Lad took charge, but he in turn was soon passed by Studley Royal, who went on for a comfortable win. Galleon finished fast into third place, just catching Arctic King on the post. Mungatoon, Wild Chase, Davolo, and Last Refrain followed, with Willie Win in last place. Studley Royal, on a track and course to Suit his long-striding action, had the race in safe keeping a good way from home. . Rebel Lad put. up a stubborn fight, after having to chase the pacemaker most of the journey. Galleon was the. only one of the higher division to hold his own, and his fast finishing effort pointed to his chance oyer the extra, three furlongs in the Great
