"LORD DERBY DOES NOT BET”
2 MEN ON FRAUD CHARGE. LONDON, March 3. 'Pile Earl of Derby has never made a, bet. This was stated 1 during a. case at Falmouth yesterday in which it was alleged that two men obtained £5O from a man to place on Lord Derby’s horse, Sabotage, on the understanding that it was a friendly tip from tlie owner. John Bell, giving an hotel address' in London, and George Anderson, who stated that he came from Montreal, were committed for trial to Cornwall Quarter Sessions charged with conspiring to obtaito and obtaining by fraud, a. cheque for £5O from John Jones, a visitor to Falmouth now staying at Torquay. Bail was refused. Both pleaded' not guilty. Jones stated that he became friendly with the men while at an hotel in | Falmouth and he gave them what he considered was a good tip to buy shares. Bell said that his business was to place bets witli leading bookmakers for Lord l Derby and the Aga Khan. He entered into an arrangement to put £5O on Sabotage on the distinct understanding' that Bell was friendly with Lord Derby. Sabotage did not win. Air Henry Edward Harrop, Lord Derby’s private secretary, said that Lord Derby had no betting agent, and. in fact, had never made a. bet.
