EASTER RACING

FRANCIS DRAKE AT AUCKLAND

TOTE DECREASE AT OMOTO

Easter racing carnivals commenced on Saturday, six racing fixtures and one trotting meeting being conducted in different parts of the Dominion. The opening of the Inter-Dominion Trotting Championships at Addington was postponed on account of rain, so that the principal fixture was the opening of the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting at Ellerslie, where Francis Drake won the Easter Handicap and Icing was successful in the Great Northern Oaks. The Feilding meeting was notable for the success in the Cup, of Wotan, 1936 Melbourne Cup winner, who had not won a race since his sensational victory at Flemington. The Greymouth Jockey Club held their first Autumn meeting at Omoto, where the totalisator showed a decrease of £slo|. j

RACING AT OMOTO. AMOUNT’S DOUBLE SUCCESS. The Greymouth Jockey Club held its first Easter meeting at Omoto on Saturday, in fine weather, and in the presence of a good attendance, but several small fields dulled speculation, and the totalisator handled only £4,933?. as against £5.444 at the corresponding meeting last year, a decrease of £510?.. The track was soft and holding as a result of the recent rains, and 1 times were slow, but throughout the day the racing was interesting. Only four first favourites were successful during the programme. but all winners were well supported and the best price of the day was returned by a fourth choice, Green Tanger.

A feature of the day was the double success of the Orari-owned and trained Amount, who won the Stewards’ Hack, and was produced again two races later to win the principal sprint, ■decisively. He was fortunate in the latter event in getting a. run on the rails at a. vital stage of the race, and he wa9 not troubled afterwards. The principal event was won easily by the second favourite Rebel Chief, who was allowed all his 1 own rules out in front, to come home a. convincing winner with something in hand. Thej favourite. Roy Bun disappointed. He| lacked dash in the straight, when expected to worry the winner. The starter, Mr G. Reed, gave general satisfaction with his. despatches, and the officials of the Club, headed by the President. Mr T. E. Coates, j and the Secretary, Mr M. J. Fogarty. Monipere and Silver Lark caused some delay at the barrier, but when they were ultimately despatched, Windward raced into the lead, from Metal Bird, Wine Card, Silver Lark, Monipere and Clubman, the latter two getting the worst of the start. Along the back the order was practically the same, except that Monipere drifted back. Wino Card moved up coming across the top, and with Windward. led into the home run, closely followed by Metal Bird, with Monipere and Clubman showing up at. the back. Monipere made a good effort, but had no show with Wino Card, who beat him easily by two lengths, with Clubman finishing on ahead of a. tired field, a length and a half away. Windward was fourth, followed by Metal Bird, both these two tiring badly. Tote £910?.. RACING AT ELLERSLIE. FRANCIS DRAKE AND ICING. Fears that the easy going would confound Master Brierly’s prospects in the President's Handicap, were unfounded. and the slow pace in the first part enabled him to be with (he field comparatively early. He won very easily. Light. Comedy led out. Master Brierly being second temporarily at. the half mile, but tit the home turn the order was Light Comedy. Malagigi. Kilonsa. and Master Briefly, in close order, with Knight of Australia, and Gay Rose next. Below the distance, Master Brierly drew away to win by two clear lengths from Kilonsa. Knight of Australia was a good third, and then came Malagigi, Gay Rose, who was pulling double at the si?; furlongs, but was beaten three

furlongs from home, Light Comedy. Paso Robles, who never flattered, and Shy. who apparently found the going against him. The Oaks:

Not. until half a mile from home did Icing seek to join the leading runners in tho Great Northern Oaks, but lefore the straight was reached, she was in front, with Airam, and soon the issue was beyond question. Fleur D’Or was the early leader. At. the five furlongs. Aiwai moved up lo (lie van, and after another furlong, she was two lengths clear of'Glenogil and Fleur D’Or together. AVildflower and Icing next, (he last-named moving up fast to be in front as soon ns they straightened up. Icing had to be kept, up to her task, but/she won comfortably by a length, a head separating Wildflower, who is the gamest of fillies, and Airam. At three or fourth lengths intervals came Glenogil. Aiwai. Accomplice, and Fleur D’Or.

Won Easily: Holding - fourth, place at. an early stage of the Brighton Hurdles, Erination was second running through the straight, the first time, and soon joined Kilberis, the pacemaker. Five furlongs from home, Erination, Kilberis and Irish Comet, were at. intervals of four lengths, and Erination, very confidently ridden, won by six lengths from Irish Comet, with three more lengths to Kilberis, who should be improved by the race. Sandrift was fourth. Killadar fell in the straight the first time. Francis Drake's Easter: The Easter Handicap was a. most interesting race, victory going to Francis Drake, who carried 51b overweight, to secure F. Atkins, in a tight finish, from Stretto, Llangollen, Golden Sheila, Suleiman, and Valamito, who could have been covered with a blanket. There was little between Suleiman, Whirling and Stretto in the betting, Francis Drake being til fair odds. Whirling broke the line first from an excellent start, but Suleiman at once took up the running from Stretto, Whirling, and Llangollen. At the six furlongs, Suleiman showed the way to Stretto, Francis Drake, Race Call, Llangollen, Whirling, and' Dark Shadow, while Tray Bit and High Tea were last. There was little difference in the order running between the five furlongs and the straight entrance, where Suleiman was still in charge from Race Call, Francis Drake, and Llangollen, with Golden Sheila getting a run on the inner. She was in charge below the distance and for several seconds looked to be a. winner, but Francis Drake then joined the issue, while Stretto and Llangollen ranged up alongside. Francis Drake finished strongest to beat Stretto by a. neck, with Llangollen a head away, and the rest very close up. After Valamito came Whirling, Tray Bit, and Race Call. Golden Sheila, weakened badly in the last fifty yards.. Meritorious Victory: Russian Ballet covered a good deal of extra, ground, and came up the centre of the track to win the Great Northern Champagne Stakes very decisively. Arvakur led out from’ Rehearsal, and approaching the halfmile these two were showing the way throe lengths clear of Hot Box, and Bronze Emerald, with Surmount, Vitement, and Russian Ballet in the next division. Bronze Emerald , fell just before the straight, where Arvakur and Surmount were beginning a battle, soon to be joined and conquered by the Nightmarch filly. Surmount beat Arvakur for second place. Hot Box, the favourite, was a moderate fourth, and evidently is> not quite in classic class, as yet. The same applies to Rehearsal and Vitement. Russian Ballet appears to be excep-i tionally promising. Neil Wins Steeples: I Neil was ridden a' •

in the Mangere Steeples. He did not make his bid till the turn to the last fence. Adsum took t'hei field along

• early, and led over the double brush from London, Lucidus, Huskie and Count Roussillon, with Neil and Smiling Thru’ well back. Huskie fell by the mile post, and Lucidus, when second, made a bad jump near the seveni furlongs. Up the hill Adsum was closely attended by Count Roussillon, and Lucidus. Count Roussillon fell at the top of the hill, and Adsum and Lucidus were together at the stonewall, with Neil rapidly bridging his leeway of about. 12 lengths, to be almost on terms with Lucidus at the final obstacle. Neil Won solidly by half a length. Smiling Thru’ was another two lengths behind Lucidus. with Adsum and London next. Huskie was going well when he met disaster. Neil, however, is capable of further improvement.

Olympus Unlucky: Philcourt was first out and first home in the Onslow Stakes, .no, in the running, he was deposed' successively by Vaals Star, and Olympus, who was unlucky. When they had ! settled down. Olympus had charge (from Bright Wings, and Vaals Star, Philcourt and Pocket Venus. Into .the straight, Olympus, Vaals Star, Bright Wings. Philcourt, and Pocket venus was the order, and the leader

i bored out badly, when tackled by Phil- | court and Pocket Venus, yet he was beaten onl.v by two heads. Vaals [Star was fourth, followed by Royevrus. First Gold Money, Noitaro and Maioro. Olympus is the most likely improver in this field of mostly moderates. He was still in front, when Broughton struck him with the whip, which caused him almost to stop dead, with surprise. Favourite Beaten:

Balinivar. Mon Acre and Lady 1 Meath were always prominent in the I Eden Handicap, in which the favourlite. Jack Tar, ;vas beaten after he had I spoiled the chances of several othe 1 !runners, by his boring-out habit. From hi bunched field Balinivar, Mon Acre. Bronze Wing. Lady Meath. Fleetwir.d, [and Jack Tar wei-e first to reach the i home run, Mon Acre, who is only a ipony. beating Balinavar by a neck, [with Lady Meath a head away. Jack Tar. Barrister and Vaals Star were in the next bunch, 'rhe three placed horses would be hard to beat again. WAIRARAPA RACES MASTER CYKLON WINS CARTERTON. April 16. The first day of the Wairarapa. Racing Club's meeting opened in drizzling rain. After two days’ heavy rain the course was heavy. Rain later developed but cleared for the last race. The attendance was very fair. ' RACING AT RANDWICK j HAMURAH WINS DONCASTER U SYDNEY, April 16. < The attendance at the Australian 1 Jockey Club’s Randwick meeting was . 67,000, compared with 49,600 last year. During the tussle in the straight in the Doncaster Handicap, King’s Head * repeatedly tried to savage Hamurah, who otherwise probably would have J won more convincingly. King’s Head’s jockey, E. Bartie, expressed the opin- 1 ion that his mount would have won 1 but for his savaging tactics. x J A highlight of the day’s racing, 1 which was favoured by delightful weather, was Nuffield’s stylish win in the Sires’ Produce Stakes 1 , turning the tables on Pandava, thus 1 for the time being deciding the respective merits of these good colts. The speedy Vic- 1 torian colt, Fort Regal, moreover, did 1 well to deprive Pandava of second money.

The-Doncaster Handicap, comprising 22 starters, was the usual hard race, in which the consistent Salamagundi mare Hamurah again justified

public confidence. Hamural ' was always at tlie head of the fiek • with King’s Head, who went down ■ fighting. Buzaloug, who finished third after being badly placed, came with a. terrific burst and can be expected to do well later. Evening Mist, -Mohican, and Valbeau, all of whom were hgavily supported, did not flatter their backers. Allunga. returned to public favour by taking the Autumn Plate after a stirring duel with the evergreen Sarcherie. Allunga’s people now regret his withdrawal from the Sydney Cup. Others to provide good Sydney Cup trials were L’Aiglon, Aitchengee, Genetout, Apollo, and Billy Boy. Sir Regent 1 pulled up badly owing ] to a recurrence of leg trouble. The St. Leger was a two-horse race, resulting in a dead-heat between John AVilkes and Cathartes. The latter’s connections are now more elated about his Cup chances than those of John AAnlkes. , The New Zealand representation at the meeting was negligible compared with former years. '

First Hurdle Race, about two miles —Keewong 9.2 (Brace) 1; Asolando, 2; Capaneus, 3. Thirteed started. The Victorian horse Jolly Boy did not appreciate the brush jumps after battens in Melbourne. He jumped poorly and eventually was pulled up. Keewong made all the running, with his closest attendants Grecian Art, Asolando, Ranchero, Capaneus, and Spearbine. Capaneus tried to get. up to Keewong in the straight, but the latter finished resolutely and won by-three-quarters of a length, with half

a length between second and third. Time 3.41. Vaucluse Handicap, seven furlongs, First Division: Herarde 9.|1 (McMenamin) 1; Palarang, 2; AA r arrawing, 3. Thirteen started. Including Rival Hit. From a good start, the top-weight, Heroic Faith, was the first to break the line. He was soon supplanted by Herarde, who was not afterwards headed. AVarrawing and Palarang challenged Herarde in the straight and made an exciting finish, in which Herarde prevailed by half a neck,

with half a. head between second and third. Dubonnet was fourth, and Rival' Hit seventh. Time, 1.252. Rival Hit and Palarang were both interfered with during the running. ; Second Division: Tickle, 8.2 (Voitre) 1; Red Thespian, 2; Sedunum, 3. Thirteen started, including Kinsfolk. After going three furlongs, the early leaders were Gymkhana and Rummage, but Red Thespian had command into the straight, where he was overtaken by Tickle, who came

with a. paralysing run to win by a length, with three-quarters of a length between second and third. Time, 1.26. Rummage was fourth. Autumn Plate, weight-for-age, one mile and a-half: Allunga, 9.3 (E. Bartie) 1; Sarcherie, 2; Genetout. 3. Eleven started. Sir Regent was splendidly away, but was never dangerous, and finished in the ruck. Sil.ver Standard led the field to four furlongs, where he dropped back beaten. Apollo, Billy Boy, Genetout, Sarcherie, L’Aiglon. and Donaster were well in the picture at this stage, with Aitchengee coming from last through the field to fourth. The field -was well bunched turning into the straight, where L’Aiglon, Allunga. Sarcherie, Billy Boy, Genetout, and Apollo began to fight out the finish. Allunga gained the advantage at the distance, with Sarcherie making a strong bid, but was not quite equal to overtaking Allunga, who won by half a. head, with Genetout a length away.

Time, 2.31 J. A.J.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes, for ' two-year-olds, seven furlongs:—Nuffield (Badger) 1: Fort Regal, 2: Pandava, 3. All started. Pandava led the way to nearing the turn, where Nuffield, coming from second last, in great style, ran up to the leader. Fort Regal also put in a thrilling run, cutting down successively Gay Romance, Early Bird, Limulet, and Destiny Bay, who were Pandava’s nearest attendants. Nuffield went past Pandava at the distance and won full of running by three-quarters of a length, with Pandava a head away. Time, 1.251. Doncaster Handicap, one mile: Hamurah 7.9 (Hickey) 1; King’s Head. 2; Buzalong 3. The first to show out were Lolorua, Mark Anthony, and Hamurah, while King’s Head moved into second place at the half mile, where Beechwood and Speardale came on the scene. When the field turned for home, there was little between King’s Head, Hamurah, and Lolorua, the next division consisting of St. Constant. Mark Anthony, Arabia, and Buzalong, the last-named mov- : ing up sharply. With a furlong to : go, Hamurah and King’s Head were i still disputing the lead, but the light- ] weight Hamurah finished on the' bet- < ter to win in the last few strides by a head. Buzalong was three-quarters ; of a length away. Troy was fourth, , Mark Anthony fifth, and then came j Highborn, Mohican, St. Constant, and j Beechwood. Time 1.37 A. A.J.C. St. Leger, one mile and * three-quarters: John Wilkes, 8.10 (Me- , Carten) and Cathartes S.lO (W. Cook) dead heat 1; Silenus 3. All started. , Cathartes and Pat were the smartest away. John Wilkes was slow to move, * but he drew level with Cathartes at £ live furlongs when Bourbon and Perimond were handy and Silenus was making up much lost ground. Cathartes and John Wilkes fought out the issue neck and neck, the former, if 1 anything, going the better, but the, judge’s verdict was a dead-heat, with I Silenus a head away third. Bourbon s was fourth, and then came Perimond b and Panaster. Time 3.4. I

DONCASTER COMMENTS. (Recd. April IS, Noon.) SYDNEY, April 18. The weather for to-day’s races is fine and sunny. Commenting on the Doncaster Handicap, "The Herald” says that the finish will provide a topic for ' argument for some time. Some persons, backed by the opinions of officials, thought that Hamurah would have won convincingly, except for interference by King’s Head. Others declared that if King’s Head had run truly, Hamurah could' not have caught him. Buzalong was one of the unlucky horses of the race, and did not get a clear run until he turned into the straight, yet, about 150 yards from the post, he looked a possible winner. Troy finished very fast to reach fourth place. Troy was in much trouble early in the race, and was not really balanced till the field entered the straight, when he was seventh.

AT MELBOURNE MELBOURNE, April 16. During tho racing at. the Williamstown course, ’the course was enshrouded with a pall of dust and there was a bad light. The Easter Stakes was won by Sindicada 8.2 fiom Beauham 7.5 and Rea Manfred 8.7. There were eight starters, including Prince Quex. Sindicada won by half a length, with a

length between second and third. Time 2.93. Riddle finished third in the- AVerril bee Handicap, which was won by Con--1 chita. Desert Chief, Bellevue, and Royal Order were unplaced. Link Divine was last in the Seaford Trial Hurdle which was won by Great Bear.
