monthly meeting. [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, March 11The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs. G. Heinz, A. R. Elcock, T. W. Duff, E. L. Park, and ETeichelmann. Apologies were received from Crs. H. T. Parry, A. H. Thompson, and H. L. Michel. Messrs Davidson and Boye waited on the Council on behalf of the Hokitika Harmonica Band, asking permission to hold' a series of Sunday concerts in aid of various local charities. —Permission was granted, subject to usual conditions. Temporary arrangements for the removal of offal from the Abattoirs were made.

A section of five chains of footpath in Weld Street, at the corner of Bealey Street, was authorised to be raised.

The financial statement showed receipts £1766/1/10, expenditure £Bl3 12/8. Accounts amounting to £985 6/11 were passed for payment. The Abattoirs’ report stated: Stock slaughtered for month of February amounted to 43 cows, 22 heifers, 56 bullocks, 4 calves, 198 sheep 175 lambs, 7 pigs; condemned, one cow. Fees collected for month of February amounted to £74/7/-; fees for corresponding month last year £7l/1/6. Mr R. Herring was granted fulltime work as custodian of reservesThe area in Hamilton Street, required by the Fire Board for its new fire station, was recommended by a sub-committee to be granted. The Housing Inspector reported inspecting a total of 235 houses, 111 of these being in first-class order, 97 in second-class order and repairable, while 27 were not worth while repairing. The Westland Hospital Board wrote notifying Board’s iutention to apply for sanction, to borrow a further sum of £3,000 for the purpose of providing sufficient funds to complete the buildings and alterations and the additional programing now being undertaken by the Board. —No objection. The Westland Provincial Committee wrote advising that it had now been decided to abandon the suggestion to appropriate £lOOO as the basis cf a scholarship fund and to establish in lieu thereof a scholarship fund to produce £5O annually for 10 years, such amount to be contributed by local bodies in the area on a population basis of Jd per head, the contribution from Hokitika Borough being £3 a year.—Agreed. New Zealand Refrigerating Co., Ltd. advised that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika during the month of February, 1938, viz-, 60 sheep.

The Returned Soldiers’ Association, Hokitika, applied to hold a sacred concert on Anzac night with authority to charge for admission.

L. S. Ross and Miss F. A. Thompson applied to instal a joint septic tank at their premises in Weld Street. • —Approved, subject to Health regulations.

R. B. Tennent applied for permission to instal a septic tank at section 1284, Hampden Street—Approved, subject to Health regulations. The Commissioner of Transport wrote asking the Council to reconsider its decision in respect to opposing the proposal to remove the speed restriction at the east end of Stafford Street and the north end of Fitzherbert Street.—Borough adheres to its decision..

Miss F. 0. Wilson wrote, asking that growth, etc., be removed from front of her property in Brittan Street.—Referred to Public Works Committee.

Air Thomas Brown applied to store three 44-gallon drums of petrol for private use only at residence in Rolleston Street.—Referred to the Town Clerk.

H. Al. Coulson wrote, asking that parking of cars along the front of his surgery be stopped.—Granted. New parking place to be-marked. Miss Sara Allen, application for compensation through accident on street.—Town Clerk to make inquiries.

A. E. F. Pierson applied i'ot compensation through damage to motor.— Responsibility disclaimed. The Director of Housing Construction wrote submitting two scheme plans, H.D. 3/137/S2 and S 3 of proposed subdivision of Botanical Gardens and Whitcombe Square for the purpose of State housing.—Plans approved.

Mrs A. Boyd applied under Section 69 of the Rating Act for half rates in respect of section 972, Jollie Street. — Granted for this year.

R. A. Detlaff (Mr A. R. Elcbck, agent) wrote respecting action to be taken regarding alleged encroachment of the owner of section 3263 Revell and Park Streets, on to Park Street.—Matter not sufficiently important to take any action.
