POISON PLOT ALLEGED
SPANIARDS IN FRANCE
MARQUIS ARRESTED
[RY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] LONDON, February 10. The Paris correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” says the Surete Nationale alleges that the Marquis de Portago, a friend of the former King Alfonso, who was arrested at St. Jean de Luz, was organising in France on behalf of the Spanish Nationalists, a number of “executions” by microbe poisoning. The Marquis, together with another Spaniard, Jesus Martin, has beenpreliminarily charged at Bayonne with forging passports. Martin is described as one of General Franco’s most active agents in France.
The Marquis de Portago was wellknown in London before the Franco rebellion. He afterwards established a London hotel bureau, on behalf of the rebels.
REMANDED IN CUSTODY
PARIS, February 10
De Portago, Martin, and two other Spaniards were charged with a breach of the law relating to poisonous substances. After questioning lasting until the early hours, they were remanded in custody.
