The statutory half-holiday in the Buller County will be observed on Saturday, instead of Thursday, in accordance with a resolution passed at the monthly, meeting of the Buller County Council yesterday. A petition signed by a number of shopkeepers and employees, in favour of the change to Saturday, was presented by Hon. AV. H. Mclntyre, who then moved that the holiday be observed on Saturday. He said that the Thursday half-day had been in force in the county for a number of years, but modern transport had brought about a great change in conditions, and the tendency was now for a universal Saturday half-day.

An apparently full-grown penguin, over a foot in height, was extracted from the stomach of a large groper caught by a Blenheim party fishing off the mouth of the Awatere River on Sunday (says the Express”). The penguin, which was of the black and white species, had only recently been swallowed, and showed very few signs of mutilation. The party, which left the AVairau bar by launch early in the morning, enjoyed a. splendid day’s sport. A large number of groper were included in the day’s catch, and the largest of these tipped the scales at 651bs.

Compulsory unionism received a word in criticism in the report presented by Mr. C. H. Clibborn, secretary, to the annual meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday. He said: “Compulsory membership of an industrial union of workers by a large majority of the board’s employees may to some extent in thj future disturb the pleasant relations which have hitherto existed between the board and its staff, as compulsory unionism apparently engenders two loyalties, one to the union and one to the employer; but one trusts that the traditional loyalty of an employee for employer will remain first in the board’s service.”
