The funeral of the late Mrs. Sarah Trehey, of Stillwater, took place this afternoon, at the Stillwater Cemetery. The service at the graveside was conducted by Rev. Father A. Kennedy.

Mr. A. Beban, junr., of Shakespeare Street, was, last evening, appointed meter-reader to the Grey Electric Power Board, at a meeting of the board. There were 82 applications from all parts of the West Coast and Canterbury. Mr. Beban has been employed for the past ten years in the State Mines office at Dunollie.

The death occurred at his residence, Black's Point, last night, after a long illness, of James Lawrence Fitzgerald, a'ged 62, a resident of the district for thirty-four years. He was a native of Fingal (Tasmania). He worked at the quartz mines in the Inangahua for many years. He is survived by a widow, one son and two daughters.

Mr. Namio Nakuji, A r ice-Consul for Japan, has arrived in AVellington, to establish a Japanese Consulate-Gen-eral. The newly-appointel Consul, Mr Kiichi Junji, will arrive from Singapore to take up his duties here in March. Mr. Nakuji is accompanied by wife, and Mr. T. Kako, of the Sydney Consulate. —Press Assn.

The death occurred in London on Saturday of Captain Thomas Shailer Weston.* formerly Commodore of the New Zealand Shipping Company. Ho had been in ill-health for about a year. Captain Weston was born in Dunedin and was educated at. the Otago Boys' High School. He was apprenticed to the New Zealand Shipping Company about 1878.
