REEFTON NOTES
[our own correspondent.]
REEFTON. January 3.
Mr. William Stevenson of Wellington. accompanied by his daughter, Miss Jean Stevenson, visited Reefton during the Christmas holidays. New Year’s Eve was showery at Reefton, and the rain was responsible for the small crowd in the streets during the night. The Inangahua Silver Band played a short programme in Broadway, and the firebells tolled the old year out and the new year in. Many parties went first footing, but the night was marked by the absence of noise. Saturday and Sunday were showery days, and the temperatures have been very high, the weather being very muggy and uncomfortable. Holiday motoi’ traffic through the district is still heavy and camping parties are quartered in several vacant sections in the streets. The Strand Reserve is full of cars.
Westland Breweries Ltd., have . donated a cup to the Reefton Jockey Club for the winner of the Lewis Pass Handicap on the second day’s racing, at the Club’s midsummer race meeting next week. The trophy is eighteen inches high. In addition to the cup the Club has donated a stop watch to be presented to the trainer of the winning horse and also a pair of riding boots for the rider of the winner. The two-year-old daughter of Rev. R. and Mrs. Seaton of Reefton, slipped on a polished floor on Friday afternoon and fell heavily on the right arm, fracturing the arm below the elbow.
Rev. C. Dickens of Wesley Church, Reefton, is on holiday, visiting his parents.
