ROUMANIAN POLICY

KING & PREMIER’S MESSAGES

RE-ASSURANCES TO BRITAIN [by CABLE PBESS ASSN.—-COPYBIGHT.] BUCHAREST, January 1In addressihg members of the 'Roumanian Cabinet at a New Year’s Day reception, King Carol said: “The present Government is the expression of the new spirit prevailing throughout -the country—a spirit which demands the complete affirmation of the Rou-r manian ' people. This affirmation, however, must be made in a spirit of justice and loyalty to others.” The speech is interpreted as meaning that the measures threatened against Jews will not be as drastic as was feared.

The new Prime Minister, M. Octavian Goga in a broadcast, announc-, ed that Parliament was beiiig dissolved. He did not indicate the date ’ of a fresh election. He said that he intended to act prudently but promptly. A recount of votes showed that the former Foreign Minister, M. Titulescu, who is at present in exile in Switzerland, was elected. M. Goga announced that he was telegraphing to Mr Neville Chamberlain that he was eager for closei’ relations with England. He has no intention of leaving the League of •«.

Nations. He would' maintain the Little Balkan Entente. The Bourse has closed until January 10, because of heavy falls in all securities, caused not only by the rush of Jews to realise their assets, but also by the fears of nonJews about possible anti-capitalist measures. ITALIAN ESTIMATE. LONDON, January 1. The Rome correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” says that Italy attaches immense importance to the formation of the new Roumanian Government, which is hailed as the break-up of the Little Entente. Signor Gayda, in the “Gioitnale d’ltalia,” says: “The new Government is antiSemitic and Nationalist. It will gradually expel the Jewish hordes. In foreign policy it will avoid the dangers of verbose democracies, and in time may even join the anti-Com-munist pact.” The Vienna correspondent says that alarm has t been caused by the prospect of an exodus of Jews from Roumania. Dr. K. von Schuschnigg’s new paper, the “Weltblatt” says: “In the interests of Austrian traders the country should immediately bolt the door by an anti-immigration law.”

It is reported from Sofia that the Bulgarian Government has forbidden Jews and other refugees from Roumania to enter Bulgaria. A report from Prague states that the immediate anxiety aifoused in '

Czechoslovakia that the Roumanian Government would not maintain its support of the Little Entente was allayed by a telegram from the new Roumanian Foreign Minister (M. Micescu) to M. Kamil-Krofta (Foreign Minister), assuring him of the continuation pf Roumanian loyalty, friendship, and sympathy with Czechoslovakia. MADAME LUPESCU LONDON, January 1. The “Daily Herald’s” Vienna correspondent says: King Carol has made a secrdt bargain with M. Goga, excluding Madame Lupescu from any antiJewish measures taken by the Government. King Carol (says the correspondent), has thus sacrificed the safety and welfare of a million Jewish; subjects to protect his own woman friend. VIENNA; January 1. 1 According to diplomatic circles at Bucharest, President Goga informed Madame Lupescu that it would be better if she left Roumania. Madame Lupescu is reported to have disappeared. LONDON, January 2. According to the “Daily Mail’s” Vienna correspondent, King Carol has finally broken with Madame Lupescu, who will not return to Roumania.
