TO-DAY’S RACING

GREYMOUTH—SECOND DAY

WAITAKA WINS MEMORIAL

The second day of the Greymouth Jockey Club’s Summer meeting is being held at Omoto to-day, in perfect weather, and before a large attendance. The track is in splendid order. The racing opened with a surprise, the • winner of the first event, the Trial Stakes, returning a dividend of nearly a quarter of a century. Results: — TRIAL STAKES, of £7O. Special weights. Five and a-half furlongs. i 8 GAYSPEAR, R. Sustin’s b.g. i (Greyspear-Sweet Smile) 7yrs, ■ 8.10 (C. Masters) 1 ; 1 BRIGHT PROSPECT, H. B. Archer’s br.g., 7yrs., 9.6 (J. Murfitt) 2 2 GLENACRE, W. Hqsking’s br.g., 6yrs, 9.6 (G. Ridgway) . . . . 3

Also started: 7 Polistina 8.10 (J. Wadley), 9 Adieux, 8.10 (E. A. Leckie); 10 Dollar Note, 8.10 (E. Rosewarne), 6 Perseverance, 8.10 (L. H. Pratt), 4 Clubman, 8.10, car. B.IS (A. Bright Prospect and Glenacre were first out and when the field settled down, Glenacre was in front, from Bright Prospect, Gayspear, Perseverance and Daymist. Across the top, Gayspear moved up alongside Glenacre and Perseverance, to take third position. Bright Prospect had drifted three lengths behind Perserverance by the time the straight was reached.. Gayspear came into the straight just heading Glenacre with Perseverance next and Bright Prospect commencing a run. Gayspear soon settled Glenacre, and hunt on to beat the fastfinishing Bright Prospect by a neck. Glenacre, who tired in the straight, was two lengths away third, and then came Perseverance, Clubman, Wandarobe, and Queen Linda. The winner paid a dividend of over a score. Tote: £7BO.

DOBSON HANDICAP TROT (harness), of £9O. 2.27 class, one mile. 5 KATE BINGEN, G. Thomson’s blk.m. (Great Bingen-Flying Kate), syrs, scr (B. Thomson) 1 1 RHINE GOLD, Jack and Me- j Kenzie’s b.g., Gyrs. 24yds (H. | Frost) 2 6 GREEN TANGER, F. Jamieson’s I b.g., Gyrs, scr (owner) .. .. 3 Also started: 2 Boreas scr (C. Isaacson), 7 Orby Lad scr (E. E. Edmonds), 8 Preamble scr (J. Lattimore), 4 Silver Letitia scr (G. Withers), 1 Wee Pal scr:(W. R. Butt) bracketed with Rhine Gold, 3 Worthy Lad 36yds (L. F Berkett). Won by three lengths; two. Times: 2.20 3-5. 2.19 4-5, 2.22 4-5. Silver Letitia was fourth. Winner trained by B. Thomson. Cobden.

Wee Pal and Preamble were slow to get going and Green Tanger led out from Kate Bingen, Rhine Gold, Orby Lad and Silver Letitia. Passing the stand, Kate Bingen raced to the front and led into the back from Rhine Gold, Green Tanger, Orby Lad, Silver Letitia and Worthy Lad. Coming into the straight, Kate Bingen had secured a three lengths lead on Rhine Gold, who was followed by Green Tanger, Silver Letitia and Orby Lad. In the run home, Kate Bingen was never troubled and won easily by three lengths from Rhine Gold, with Green Tanger third, two lengths away. Then came Silver Letitia, Worthy Lad, Boreas, Orby Lad and Wee Pal, in that order. This was Kate Bingen’s first victory, and the first winning drive for the young Cobden trainer, B. Thomson, who, however, has now had a win and a second in three drives. She was a warm favourite when she failed on Saturday, but was allowed to go out paying a good price to-day. Rhine Gold went an even race, but made no impression on the winner in the straight. Wee Pal was slow away and was never within striking distance. Tote:

Winner trained by F. A. Roberts, Riccarton..

The principal event, the W. R. Kettle Memorial Cup was won by the Riccarton trained Waitaka, after a splendid race. The Robespierre gelding, who won at Hokitika and ran two seconds on Saturday, was allowed to go out at surprisingly good odds but was always in the leading division and won decisively/ Wino, Wine Card apd Fiord caused a lengthy delay at the barrier and the three of them, after drawing the first three places, were utimately placed on the outside. Tunneller, who caused a lot of trouble on Saturday, was started from the back. Linguist, Rose Vai, Wine Card and Wino, Waitaka led past the stand from Linguist, Rose VI, Wine Card and Wino, Glenogil and Fiord, with Tunneller last. At the half-mile, Waitaka (on the rails) was half-a-length ahead of Linguist, with two lengths to Wino, Rebel Chief, and Winecard.
