NEW YEAR'S EVE

DISTRICT FESTIVITIES With a continuance of favourable weather, large crowds are again expected at Greymouth, this evening, and the traditional scenes of New Year’s Eve are expected to equal those of previous years. The advent of 1938 will be received with noisy hilarity, and “first-footing” will no doubt retain its popularity. There will be no lack of entertainment, both private and public, during the next few days. Racegoers will be presented with the evergreen problem of picking winners ' at Omoto, to-morrow and on Monday, l when the Greymouth Jockej r Club will hold its midsummer meeting. The first race each day is timed to start at 12.35 p.m. A midnight matinee is to take place at the Regent Theatre, to-night, commencing at 11.15 o’clock. At the Town Hall, the Stanley McKay Company will conduct a midnight matinee, and community singing. Dancers will have plenty of opportunity to enjoy themselves to-night at the following rendezvous: — Sehaef’s Hall: New Year’s Eve Carnival Ball.

A Fireworks Carnival will no doubt attract many visitors to Hokitika, tonight. Special trains will leave for Greymouth and Ross, at 12.20 a.m., after the display.

Aquatic enthusiasts will be catered for by the regatta on Lake Brunner, which will be concluded to-morrow.

The Grey-Cobden Whippet Club’s stake meeting, is to be held at the Cobden Domain, on Sunday. A special excursion to Punakaiki will be conducted on Sunday, by Gibbs’ Transport, Ltd. Buses will leave Greymouth at 9 a.m., and the return journey from Punakaiki will commence at 6.30 p.m., or later.

POST AND TELEGRAPH New Year’s Day, will be observed as a close holiday by the Post Office, but the usual mails will be despatched up to 6.45 a.m. No postmen’s deliveries will be made. Correspondence, registered as well as ordinary, will be delivered over the public counter, from 7 o’clock to 8 o’clock this evening. The private-box lobby will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., to-morrow. The Telegraph Office will be open from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., and from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be continuous attendance at the telephone exchange. On Monday, only one delivery will be made by the postmen at Greymouth.
