Acceptable: The Hokitika-owned Tea Tray gelding, Acceptable, once a brilliant sprinter, looked well at Hokitika, but failed to show any dash after three furldrigs had been covered. He did not seem /to relish the corners, but even then he did not show much spirit in the straight.

Disappointed: t MCtal Bird failed to show up at Hokitika in his only race, the Christmas Handicap, over six furlongs, and he heat only Acceptable home after trailing the field' to the straight. He is suited much . better by a longer journey, and may race more prominently at Omoto. Invoice:,

T.' Lloyd will be. at Wyndham on Saturday and' at Invercargill on Monday and Tuesday with Invoice, who ■will he ridden by F. Smith. The two-year-old Improvident, who ran a satisfactory race at Wingatui on Tuesday, has been returned to Riccarton, in company with Raeburn, who also shaped reasonably well in his second effort at Wingatui.

He was well back early, and was finishing on fast over the jseven furlongs journey. Well beaten by Drink Up and Potent he was going better than any o* 1 the others at the post. i Rebel Chief:

Rebel Chief was turned out in good order by owner-trainer, F. Hall/ at Hokitika, and he ran a good race in the Westland Handicap, under his 9.4He had no chance with Linguist, .who won comfortably,-despite having only a half-length advantage at the post, but the Robespierre gelding pleased by the manner in which he ran out the 10 furlongs. Last season, Rebel Chief contested no fewer than 34 races for seven victories six seconds and one third.

Best Riccarton Maiden:- ' F. Christmas need not have any fear for the welfare of his Greymouth owner, Mr D. H. Roberts, as far as Glenogil is concerned. The Colossus filly is the best maiden prospect at Riccarton. A lino to her ability may be taken from the nature of hei' Greymouth nominations. Although a maiden and engaged in a hack sprint on Saturday, .she is in the Kettle Cup of one mile, the principal event on Monday. She is also in the principal event on the first day .at Reefton. She is to be ridden by G. Watson, C. C. McCarthy’s apprentice.

The Buzzer’s Breeding: There is- a good mixture of Australian and New Zealand blood in the pedigree of The Buzzer, the winner of the Auckland Cup- He traces back to Culroy, a mare brought from Australia by Mr G. G. Stead. Culroy was got by Wallace from Hortense, one of the fastest of her time in Australia. Culroy produced Culprit, a good winner, to Royal Artillery or Charlemagne 11., and’ also Culture to Boniform. Culture joined Mr I. G. Duncan’s stud and subsequently found her way to Queensland, where she whs bred to Syce and threw Eastern Belle, the dam of The Buzzard, who raced in England under the name Of The Bastard. He was got by Spion Kop from Valescure, by Swynford— Valve, by Velasquez from Gas. by Ayrshire from Illuminate, by Roscrucian from Paraffin, and so belongs to the same family as Simper. Spion Kop was got by Spearmint, so The Buzzer has Musket at the top and bottom of his pedigree, and wins the Auckland Cup in the same place as where the • mighty Musket made his name world famous.

NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE.

COURTCRAFT’S N.Z. RECORD

[SPECIAL TO “STAR.”]

AUCKLAND, December 29

Four aristocratic runners paraded for the King’s Plate, at Ellerslie, today, and Courtcraft, pushed by Trench Fight, after Oratory had made the pace into the straight, won in New Zealand record time of 1.36. Royal Chief was always last, being slow to leave, and being very sore, was unable to strech out. Trench Fight made the first move in the straight, but Courtcraft responded at once, and scored decisively. The first quarter occupied 24 1-5, three 35 2-5, the four in 47 3-5, and the five 59 3-5. Round Up’s Record: One of the smallest fields on record paraded for the Summer, Cup, but thanks mainly to Grateful, who made the pace, and then finished last, the winner, Round Up, achieved a course and provincial record of 2.4. For the first .six furlongs, Grateful was> clear of Dark Shadow with Kiltowyn, Jonathan, Round Up, Sinking Fund, and Gay Rose at intervals, as named. Crossing the top, Round Up was three and a half: lengths from Grateful. Dark Shadow took charge at the straight ,and was soon challenged by Round Up, who drew aWay to beat Dark Shadow by one and a half lengths. Jonathan was a length away third, and then came Sinking Fund, and others, well beaten. The first half mile was run in 51, the six furlongs in 1.16, and the last four in 48. Stretto Again:

Stretto, backed down to short odds, won the Electric Handicap as. easily as the Railway Handicap on Monday. She began well from the rails, Tray Bit beginning slowly from the outside, and Airam being hopelessly left. In a few yards, Orate and Galilee had run past Stretto, while, Tray Bit also ran up fast in the first quarter. Approaching the straight the order was Tray Bit and Stretto, Galilee, Anion, Trilliarch and Orate, Paluster and Mangukaha. Immediately Stretto ran clear, and won by three lengths from Tray Bit and Mangukaha, who deadheated. Orate was fourth, and then came Trilliarch, Galilee and Palustre.

J. Morland was associated and which produced some notable performers, including the N.Z. Cup winner Country Belle. Curfew Bell and Country. Belle were three-quarter sisters.

TROTTING NOTES.

(By “Searchlight”).

CHRISTCHURCH, December 29

Amongst the horses that raced at Westport with success and will be seen in commission at Greymouth, are Lombard, Kingussie, Tommy Guy, Doubt, Casino, Twenty Grand. Zincali, all winners, and Royal Grattan, Buddy, Eva Truman, Travisque, Storm Signal, Sylvan, Savoldi, Superb, Happi, and Purina, who filled 1 minor places.

Twenty Grand: The .success of Mr R. E. Hall’s gelding, Twenty Grand, at Westport, where he won the principal race, the Westport Trotting Club Handicap, of two miles in 4.37 2-5, will gain him further friends ’ at Victoria Park, where he is engaged both days. An Improver: L. F. Berkett has Sylvan trotting in his best style as he registered 3.30 1-5 when he finished second to Diana Wild in the Stockton Handicap on the first day at Westport. Worthy Lad in the same stable got on the winning list, but Happi, Travisque, and Dollar Maid, did not race up to expectations. Consistent Form:

Golden Moness showed good form by winning the Gothard Handicap on the opening day at Westport, and finishing second to Twenty Grand in the Westport Trotting Club Handicap on the concluding day. Her time 4.35 4-5 for two miles was the fastest at the meeting. Off Colour: Chudic failed to race up to expectations. He fell in his only engagement, on the first day, and did not complete the full journey on the second day, in the (Westport Trotting Club Handicap. Nev/ Brighton Candidates:

G. F. Robinson .scored two firsts, a second, and a third with Tiny Guy, while Our Fay registered' a first and second, their efforts being quite in keeping with their track work at the seaside before they left home. Freely Raced: The Reefton trotter Tommy Guy, was freely raced, his record being four starts with a first and two seconds. M. B. Edwards:

C. King, who was in charge of M. B. Edwards' team. scored with Twenty Grand and Zincali. Connenora earned place money, but the trotter Thor, was not in form. At Omoto:

Both light harness events at. the Greymouth Jockey Club’s Summer meeting have drawn good fields. In the Borough Trot Handicap of one mile, 2.27 class, Boreas. Kate Bingen, both on scratch. Worthy Lad on 24yds read well, and Bridget Borough on 12yds, Purina scr.. and Boreas scr. may find favour with speculators in the Stewards' Trot Handicap. Special Train: A special horse train will leave Christchurch for Greymouth on Tuesday, January 4, and it will curry horses engaged at, the Greymouth T.C.’s Summer meeting. This meeting is always popular with owners and

trainers’ and strong support from Canterbury is assured. Freely Raced: C. S. Donald freely raced the members of his team at the Christmas meetings, where he won seven races, three at Wairarapa, Superior Rank (2), and Sans Pariel, two at Ashburton, Plutus and Ferry Post, and . a. similar number at Westport, with Lombard and Casino* At Canterbury Park: The Reef ton owned and trained Native Huon from 48yds will be supported in the Introductory Handicap, and he may receive most opposition from Renegade on 36yds and Gay Crusader on 24yds. Good in Saddle:

Waijtahi on scr. should find little difficulty in disposing of the opposition in the Railway Handicap. Of the others Esplendor and Harlequin read the best. Big Race: A select field of eight well-perform-ed horses stand their ground in the Canterbury Handicap for horses assessed at 2.27 or better and under favourable conditions a keen contest looks assured. Plutus, who defeated Pot Luck at. Ashburton, is not engaged and C. S. Donald will rely upon Village Guy. Neither Cloudy Range, Bingen Palm, nor Wav Buoy raced at the southern fixture, while an improvement in the recent displays’ of Evicus, Graham Direct and Gamble may be expected. Pot Luck reads well, also War Buoy and Bingen Palm.

A Large Field: Twenty-four horses are engaged in the Lyttelton Handicap, and success will largely depend upon a good run in the early stages of the race. Golden Moness, Molly Direct, and Logan Palm are recent winners, but in view of their re-handicaps they do not appeal. Lightning Lady and Waitaki Power raced well at Ashburton and in company with Great . Divide may be found in the firing line at the finish. Unhoppled Trotters: Although Captain Bolt did not handle the track to advantage at Ashburton, he is not to be condemned, and in view of his fine displays, at Addington last month, he is certain to find favour with investors in the Stewards' Handicap. Lady Sonoma is overdue, while Sister Mary should race well off scratch. # Middle Class:

Seven middle class pacers and the champion trotting mare figure on the card in the Islington Handicap. The limit is only 36yds and this should suit Sea Gift, and if beaten It may be by Blair Athol or the speedy Southern Smile.

Templeton Handicap: The Papanui owned and trained Ginger Jack has only to begin smartly in the Templeton Handicap and he ■will keep the opposition busy. Colonel Grattan has winning form to recommend him, while Donald Dhu and Belle Grattan are on the improve, and entitled to respect. Ten Furlongs:

With Double Great and Gallant Knight, Mr J. R. McKenzie holds a strong hand in the settlement of the Au Revoir Handicap. Raydusi and Parisienne are possibilities and capable of covering a fast mile and a quarter.
