CHRISTCHURCH, December 29. Otago beat Canterbury by S 9 runs in the Plun'ket Shield match, which conncluded at Lancaster Park to-day. Canterbury, after their first innings lead of 41. collapsed) in the second innings, and were all out for 141, in reply to Otago’s second innings score oi 271. At the end-of yesterdays play, Otago had scored 105 for the loss of one wicket, the not out batsmen being Uttley (74) and J. Robertson (14). Uttley started very soundly to-day, but when he had added 14, he was deceived by a well-flighted ball from Burtt, and was out l.b.w. With Robertson, Chettleburgh, ■ after a patient start, attacked the bowling, scoring runs quickly. After the dismissal of these .batsmen the side collapsed, Mulcock, the Canterbury medium-paced bowler, taking the rest of the wickets quickly, and Dickinson being the only batsman to play with confidence. Mulcock took eight wickets for 61 runs, including the hat-trick. Canterbury’s attempt to score runs quickly met with little success. McRae (43) and Gasson (28) being the only successful batsmen. Dunning, who strained a leg muscle while batting, bowled well, though slower than usual, and in four successive maiden overs he took three wickets, his average at the end of the innings being 5 for 47. „In a Sheffield Shield match against South Australia, Queensland, second innings, made 426 (Rogers 181, Ward four for 152, Waite two for 41, Grimmett two for 107). South Australia, second innings, lost two wiCkets for 93 runs (Bradman not out 39, Badcock 45). South Australia won by eight wickets.
VICTORIA DEFEATS N.S.W.
MELBOURNE, December 29.
In a Sheffield Shield match against Victoria, New South Wales, second innings, made 360 (Barnes 97, Fingleton 150, Chipperfield 22. Fleetwood-Smith two for 94, Gregory three for 62). Victoria, second innings, lost one wicket for 47 runs. Victoria won on the first innings by 231 runs. GREY B. V.
