TAKES THE CAKE

A TERRIER’S EXPLOIT. LONDON, December 4. Tragedy nearly marred the thirtysecond birthday of Mr. Terence CuiTtso, commercial artist, of Chiswick, London. His pet nine-year-old Irish terrier Rip was left alone in the same room as the birthday cake. Rip should have been in his tworeomed “luxury flat” which his master had built in the garden. It has a dining room, bedroom and glass windows. During the party, however, he hid behind a. divan in the studio, and next morning Mr. Cuneo -found that the remnants of his birthday cake had disappeared. Rip lay asleep under: the table.

On the floor were .17 long wire pins, which, surrounded by wax and surmounted by sugar roses, had been the candles for the cake. Fifteen were missing, with the 51b. of iced cake. Mr. Cuneo rushed off with Rip to thedogs’ hospital and an X-ray photograph displayed the- 15 missing pins,, each nearly 3in. long, in Rip’s stomach. "Is ho a good feeder?” asked the veterinary surgeon. He’ll eat any-, thing- almost any time,” said Mr. Cuneo. So the veterinary surgeon decided to feed Rip and feed him well. Never in his life has Rip had such meals—4lb. of beef and suet pudding a day, followed by a rabbit boiled with its fur still on. Rip was freed from the pins, and returned home fatter than ever.
