EMPIRE GAMES

NEW ZEALAND OFFICIALS

APPOINTMENTS CRITICISED

[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.]

WELLINGTON, December 10. At a meeting of the council of the Olympic and Empire Games Association to-day, Messrs A. McCormick and A. C. Kitto, both of Wellington, were elected manager and assistant manager respectively of the New Zealand team for the British Empire Games at. Sydney in February. Mrs E. G. Sutherland, also of Wellington, was elected chaperone. Before the ballot was taken, Mr r. N. Rundle (New Zealand Swimming Association) referred to the number of officials it was proposed to send with the team. The managership of an Olympic team was an onerous duty, he said, but with other teams the duties of the manager were mainly social. .In this case there would be managers for a number of the separate teams as well as trainers and masseurs. He could not see what work an assistant manager would have to.do. He felt that the position was superfluous. If there was plenty of money, he would sooner see it expended in snding an additional athlete. , . Mr- A. D. Bayeld (New Zealand Rowing- Association) remarked that the team would be about 60 strong. The secretary (Mr H. Amos) said that only a few organisations had nominated officials, ahd most of them would have heavy duties. For the Berlin Olympics there were 87 officials to 324 competitors. Mr Rundle: We have permitted sports bodies to provide their own managers, who: will act as captains of the teams.

Mr G. S. Leeder (New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association): If every association appoints a manager you will require an extra manager to manage the other managers. Mr Rundle referred to the executive’s decision to appoint an assistant manager. He had not had a previous opportunity to explain his views, although he understood that the actions of the executive should be confirmed by the coupcil.

The Chairman: Not necessarily.' Mr Rundle: I do not, expect you to agree with my criticism, but I know there has been severe comment on the action of .the executive. Mr F. H. Hughes, of Invercargill, was appointed manager of the New Zealand boxing, team for the Empire Games‘at a meeting of the council of the New Zealand Boxing Association to-day. Mr Hughes has been president of the Southland Boxing Association for the last eight years, and is also interested in a number of other sports, including golf and badminton. WRESTLER STOWS AWAY.
