HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING [our own correspondent.] HOKITIKA, November 12. • The Hokitika Borough Council met yesterday. Present: The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Perry), Crs. T. W. Duff, G. Heinz, Dr Teichelmann, A. H. Thompson. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. E. L. Park, 11. L. Michel, A. R. Elcock, IT. T. Perry. The financial statement, showed: — Receipts £509/5/6. Expenditure £l, 452/15/6. Accounts amounting to £44<> 19/4 were passed for payment. Water loan accounts amounting to £1440/8/8 already paid were approved. Owing to the absence of the manager, Mr. J. Conning, on leave, no report was available from the abattoirs. Fees for dogs’ licenses were fixed at 10/- for ordinary dogs and 2/6 for sheep and cattle dogs. It was decided to ask the Savings Bank for a right-of-way opposite the Bank of N.Z. for the purpose of widening street between Revell and Beach Street which would enable a footpath to be constructed. Authority was given to call tenders for the painting of the Sexton’s house at the cemetery.

As the suggested joint new chambers for the Westland County Council and Hokitika Borough Council would require an adjustment of sections with: the Fire Board it was decided to ask the Board to confer with the other two bodies on the matter. ' Inward cofrespondeh'ce: From the Ranieri Electric Ltd. advising that 60 c.p. lights had been installed at the corner of Park and Jollie Streets, and the corner of Hoffman and Hampden Streets, and also about half-way up the hill to the cemetery.

From the Inangahua County Council advising a proposed presentation to the Hon. Minister of Public Works and asking if the Council is prepared to contribute. — £l/1/- voted. From Miss V. A. Ross, ’application for annual leave. —Approved. ' From the Blackball Picnic Committee, application for the use of Cass Square for their annual picnic on Saturday, February 19, 1938. —Approved. From the Hokitika Fire Board asking that the installation of fire plugs in upper Park Street and also in upper Sewell Street be carried out as soon as possible.

From the Municipal Association advising the difficulty experienced by the Government Housing Department through the variation in building bylaws amongst the local bodies of the Dominion and asking for co-operation with the Department as far as possible.

From the Canterbury Progress League, Westland Committee, asking what progress had been made by the Borough in respect of building bylaws, and that authority be granted for planting shrubs and ornamental trees on the streets in the residential part of the town. —Deferred. . From B. Gaines, application for street stand at the corner of Revell and Weld Streets for Christmas season to conduct a dart game.—Granted at charge of 10/- per day. From E. M. Cameron, application for permission to instal a septic tank on section 1104 Park Street. —Granted.

From the Sisters of Mercy, application for permission to instal a septic tank on part section 3362, Hokitika Convent. —Granted.

From the Manager, Natiqnal Bank, Hokitika, application for permission to instal a septic tank on Section No. 6, Hamilton and Revell Streets. —Granted.

From the members of the family of the late W. A. Thompson tenderingthanks for expression of sympathy. From the N.Z. Refrigerating Co. advising that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika during the month of October, viz., 126 sheep, 4 lambs. From the State Advances Corporation, Wellington, notifying that sand is being removed from the beach at the corner of Park and Revell Streets thereby endangering the section at high tide. —Warning notices to be placed by Inspector. From the Chairman Local Government (Amalgamation Schemes) Bill Committee, Wellington, advising that a .special parliamentary committee will hear evidence from local bodies and' others desirous of placing before the committee their views on the principles and provisions of the Bill, and that notifications to be heard must reach Wellington before the 18th instant and a date will then be fixed for hearing the evidence.

From the District Engineer, Public Works Department, Greymouth, advising that the matter of turnouts in the' Hokitika railway bridge had been referred for consideration with supplementary estimates at a basis of £1 for £1 and that the cost per turnout would be approximately £l,OOO if wide enough to pass a train.—No action taken.

From A. T. Cumming and four other local butchers asking that the Council accept the offer of the N.Z. Refrigerating Co. in regard to purchase of runners. —Approved.

From Wm. Jeffries and Co., application under Section 54 of the Health Act, 1920, for consent to carry on an offensive trade in the Borough, viz., drying and salting of hicTps and skins. —Referred to Health Department. From M. H. Houston and Co., application under Section 54 of the Health Act, 1920, for consent to carry on an offensive trade in the Borough, viz., drying and salting of hides and skins. —Referred to Health Department. From W. J. Richards, application to lease part of Municipal Reserve No. 537 Sale Street with a frontage of 66 feet. —Approved.

From the secretary, Hokitika Business Men’s Association, asking that consideration be given to the framing of building by-laws for the Borough.— Deferred pending Building Institute’s report. Councillors agreed the by-laws were necessary.

From the Swimming Club applying for repairs to baths.—Granted. From W. H. Thompson, application foi leave to transfer section —Approved,
