monthly meeting [OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA. October 15. The monthly meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council was held last evening; present: Mr. G. A. Pl- - Crs. H. T. Parry G Heinz. H. L. Michel, E. L. Park, E. Teichelinann. Apologies were received from Crs. A. R. Elcock. T. W. Dull, and 11. A. Thompson. • A deputation consisting ot Messrs. F McCabe and J: Howat waited on the Council on behalf of the Hokitika Cricket Association to ask assistance for the relaying of the cricket pitch in Cass Square. The Council decided to carry out the work, the approximate cost to be about £lO. Mr. F. McGregor waited on tne Council, complaining of the Council doing its own smithy work on the waterworks, and asking that where possible this work should be given to local tradesmen. Cr. Heinz explained that the man doing the work had been an unemployed blacksmith, and his work was satisfactory. The Mayor pointed out the difference in ing picks alone was £6 against. £lo 10/-, a month. The Council decided that, as far us picks are concerned, they would carry on as usual, bill, .is for’oilier work, tin- foreman would lw instrucled to obtain what he could from the tradesmen in the town. A report on the drain at Eastgate s Bakery, Weld Streel, was referred to the Works Committee. The Council approved the replacement of a stove at the residence al the abattoirs. Street lights were authorised lor corners of Park and Jollie Streets. Hampden and Hoffman Streets and half-way up Cemetery Hill. The financial statement showed: — Receipts £2.596/19/10. expenditure £606/10/6. Accounts amounting to £1,452/15/8 were passed for payment. Water works accounts amounting to £2.425/18/9 were also passed for payment. The Abattoirs report stated: —Stock slaughtered for month of September amounted to: 25 cows, 83 heifers, 64 bullocks, to calves. 9 pigs, 191 sheep; condemned, one bullock. Fees collected during month amounted to £6l/1/-. Fees for corresponding month last year, £64/5/6. The manager of the National Bank of N.Z. sent notice under the, Fencing Act of intention to erect a new boundary fence between the bank section and’ the Town Hall reserve, and asking the Council to confirm the specifications of the fence io be erected and agree to pay half the cost.—Referred io Works Committee.

G. H. Coles, M. J. Croawell and N. Rouse, sent applications for special water service domestic connections to their bouses in Beach Road. — Agreed at water rate of £2 per annum each.

The Valuer-General forwarded notification to notify nominal occupiers under Sections 12 and 13 of the Rating Act, 1925, in respect of abattoirs land. —Mayor appointed. J. V. Conning, applied for seven days’ special leave to attend military camp at Burnham. —Granted. The hon. secretary. Returned Soldiers' Association advised that the matter of improving ventilation in the Soldiers’ Hall is receiving full consideration.

.Mr. Pugh, contractor, applied for permission to erect a hoarding along the Revell Street frontage of the National Bahk during building* operations. —Granted. The Commissioner of Transport forwarded draft of amending legislation in regard to taxis and town carriers, and asking for any comments or representations that it might desire to make.

The hon. secretary. West land Rugby Sub-Union wrote asking that members of the Reserves Committee meet representatives of the Football Union to inspect (’ass Square with a view to making recommendations io the Council for much-needed improvements. — Agreed.

F. Gardyne and four other petitioners asked that the drain on the east side of Jollie Street between Hampden Street and Park Street be given tin outlet to Hampden Street and that where necessary this area be piped. — Granted. Mrs. ,M. Delbridge. Gibson's Quay, applied for a IJin water service connection to residence for fire purposes only—Granted. To be installed at applicant’s expense. R. A. Detlaff and 40 other petitioners asked thtu me portion of Park Street loading on to the beach be kept open for pedestrian and vehicular traffic. —Xo trespassing on street will be permitted.

A. C. Armstrong, hon. secretary Westland Sub-Centre, Red Cross Society, advised that classes for training in first-aid anil home nursing had commenced. asking whether Council would assist with a donation towards the Society’s fund. —£1/1/voted. Mrs. B. E. Coyle wrote asking that rental for grazing rights on part of Whitcombe Square bo reduced and that some attention be given to the fences.—Deferred.

E. T. Shorin’ wroit- asking for grazing rights over north pari of Reserve .\o. 446. Stafford Street, at a rental of £5 a year for live years, applicant to put the fences in order. —Leased to T. Staines.

T. N. Haddock, applied for grazing rights over the western half of Reserve No. 4 16 al a rental of £2 a year, applicant will fence this portion al his own expense, and keep the reserve in good order.—Leased to T. Staines. Westland County Council, forwarded a letter from the South Island Travel Association regarding contributions towards issuing a booklet for publication purposes.—£2/2/- already granted as much as Council can afford.

Westland County Council forward'd copy of letter from the Public Works Department, in regard to clearing trees on forestry reserve, the value of the reserve being about £ll5 5/-. and the County asked this Council's views as to accepting its share of the liability involved. —-Council declines liability.

Westland County Council advised that the County had set up a subcommittee to confer with a. similar committee from this Council in regard to the joint building scheme of offices. —Mayor, Crs. Duff and Teichelman to represent Borough.

D. J. Evans, hon. secretary of the N.Z. Centennial. Westland Province, forwarded report of meeting of Centennial Committee, and asked whether the Council agrees to the allocation of £135/14/- for the Hokitika Borough, spread over a period of three years.— Allocation accepted. H. AV. G. Park, agent for Mrs. Sara Michel, wrote asking that surrender of lease No. 2477 in respect of Municipal Reserve No. 496 which was
