NIGHT BATTLE IN STREETS
POLICE SHOOT BANDITS PARIS, August 13. One man was killed and two seriously wounded during a revolver battle at three o’clock this morning in the streets of Aix-en-Provence' between police and bandits. Five bandits broke into a distillery and were in the middle of loading a barrel of spirits worth £2OO in a. stolen'van when they stepped on a wire which sounded an alarm signal. T he bell was heard by neighbours, who warned the police, but not by the bandits. A squad of 10 policemen arrived:). few moments later and. flashing’ electric, lamps at the, bandits, ordered them to .surrender. A volley of revolver shots was the reply. The shots missed the policemen but. dazed them for a moment, and gave tiio bandits time to escape. The police gave chase through the streets of Aix, and the bandits fired back at them as they retreated. The first man to fall was Joseph Salidetti. whom the police shot dead. A quarter of mile further the police brought down two of his companions simultaneously, wounding one in tile arm and the other in tin l leg. The chase continued for a few minutes more before the police arrested the fourth bandit. The fifth man escaped. ______________
