TODAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping MEETINGS TO COME June 5,9, 12—Auckland. June 9, 10, 12 —Dunedin. June 9, 12 —Napier Park. June 17, 19 —Hawke’s Bay. June 19 —Greymouth, June 19 —Opotiki. June 24, 26 —Wanganui. June 26 —Ashburton County. Spelled: Galleon will be spelled now Until next season. He has won £532 in stakes this year.

Travenna: Travenna has been schooled over hurdles in private and from all accounts shapes well. He looks the beau ideal sort to make a jumper.

Jumper Injured: As the result of an injury to one of his legs, received when he came to grief in the Melville Steeplechase at Te Rapa last Saturday, Curlew has had to be eased up. It is doubtful if this horse will be seen out at the Great Northern meeting. Northern Engagements:

Riding engagements already announced for the Great Northern meeting are: R. Beale, Jolly Beggar, Emancipation, Royal Limond; F. Fergus, Gay Broney (Penrose Hurdles), Huskie (Great Northern Hurdles); R. McTavish, Gay Rose.

Early Education: Dr. M. G. Loulisson will be represented in early two-year-old racing by two youngsters, which T. Lloyd has recently broken in. One is the DefoeMisgovern colt bought by Dr. Louisson at the Trentham sales; and the. other is by Hoylake from Royal Baby. Both fife chestnuts.

Not at Foxton: Essex, whose feet gave trouble after his successful visit to the Auckland summer meeting, has been in work again at Trentham for some time, but rwas not taken to Foxton, where he accepted in the Kebbel Memorial. He was not considered forward enough.

Change of Stable: Mr D. Grant, of Timaru, has decided to have some of his horses trained at Riccarton, andi five of them are due to arrive at D. Cotton’s stable to-day. These will include Kinnoull, who has not raced' for some months, Enoughton Lad, by Pink Coat from lan's March, who is a Derby, candidate, and three yearlings, one being a sister to Kinnoull.

Hard Luck: It is unfortunate for W. Goscomb to lose the services of Royal Mimic at this period of the jumping season, as the.Gisborne trainer had this promising hurdjer in great heart. A dual winner oVer the battens at the Manawatn meeting last month, Royal Mimic was regarded as a likely lightweight for the Great Northern Hurdles to be run next Saturday. Contentious Question:

The question of granting dual licenses fo train arid ride flat racers promise' - o be one of the contentious remits that will come up for consideratibn at the July meeting of delegates to the Racing Conference. It is reported that there will be strong opposition to the renewal of this custom from the North Island delegates. 1

.Late Arrival: Cock of the North, who is engaged in the cross-country races to be run at Wingatui, took soriie years to reach the turf. He is now rising 12 years, and ran third in the Aylesbury Steeples run at the Grand National meeting, to Burglar 10.5, and Nocturnus 10.11, when carrying 9.7. Cock „of the North was got by Royal Mac from Dabchick, by Formosan —Aqualis, by Perkin Warbeck 11.

Horowhenua Appeals: His third to Gay Rose and King Rey at Te Rapa, should earn Horowhenua many friends for the Cornwall Handicap. Slow to find his feet, Horoiwhenua was hopelessly pocketed near the rear of the field for the greater part of the journey, but when he did obtain a run he finished brilliantly. Horowhenua looks sure to improve a. god deal and with conditions in his favour he should be one of the hardest to beat at Ellerslie next week. He is trained at Ellerslie by the former Riccarton trainer, H. Rama.

New History? If Jolly Beggar succeeds at Ellerslie in the Great Northern Hurdles, with 11.13,he will have the distinction of carrying the highest weight to victory since the race was increased to two miles and a-half. The event, which was established in 1892, was originally two miles, and it remained so till 1903. During that period, St. Simon, owned by Mr. R. H. Skipwith. who is at present starter for the Auckland Racing Club, won with 12.12, which is the biggest load that was ever carried successfully in the race. However, in 1895 P. Butler’s Liberaton won ■with 12.9. In 1904, 1905 and 1906 the distance was two miles and a-quarter. and in 1907 it was made two miles and a-half, and so it remains today. The best efforts during the latter period were Make Up, 11.5, in 1933, and Fisher. 11.2, in 1921. Jolly Beggar is quite as fit to-day as ever he was, and the Greymouth-owned jumper will not lack for support.

MEETINGS TO COME

June 12—Ashburton, June 19, 23—Auckland.

Deaths of Horses: At yesterday’s meeting of the Board of the New Zealand Trotting Association, the deaths, of the following horses were reported:—Energetic, Gay Gordon, Sandown, and Raven’s Girl. Raven’s Girl was foaled; in 1914, and was rising 23 years when she died.. She was a successful brood 1 mare and left Hope Dillon 3min 33sec, Mac Dillon. 2min 45 l-ssec., Dark Girl 2min 54 l-ssec., and Eureka rßoy 2mm 42sec. Hope Dillon is the dam of a brilliant pacer in Pot Luck. Bracketed Horses:

The following horses will be bracketed on the totalisator at the Canterbury Park meeting on next Saturday. Y aid hurst Handicap: Kuini and Golden Eagle.

Winter Handicap: Grace McElwyn" and Lucky Jack. Ellesmere Handicap: Airflow and U. Scott; Belle Grattan and Kibo; Sage King and Harlequin. Stewards’ Handicap: Lucky Jack and Grace McElwyn.

King’s Warrior: The Auckland Trotting Cup winner King’s Warrior, is being given judicious work with a. view to racing at Addington in August. His knees are ptill rather ungainly, but he is quite sound. King’s Warrior has proved himself a high-class racehorse during the past two seasons, and his performances make it obvious that he is .capable of winning off his present mark, which is 4.27 for two miles. One of his best efforts, says an exchange, was when he won the Auckland Trotting Cup in December last. About a week before that race he struck one of his knees and was’ lame, with the result that no work could, be allotted him for five successive days. The fact that he led practically all the way, and won decisively, is evidence of his ability.

May Not be Long: The three-year-old pacer Worthy Need is one of the most dependable young horses in training. On the second day of the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s Winter meeting he competed in the Royal Handicap off 36yds in a field of fifteen. During the contest he was forced to cover a lot of extra ground, yet he fought on to he fourth at the judge’s box. As the winner, Frisco Silk, covered the mile and ahalf off 12yds in 3.22 1-5, Worthy Need’s effort should encourage followers of form to support him when he starts in a suitable class. By Frank Worthy from Necessity, this three-year-old was first handled by J. -L kennerley, but Kennerley could not persuade him to do anything kindly, and it. remained for the young Canterbury trainer, C. K. Yeatman, who served his apprenticeship with F. Holmes, to bring him out. Yeatman won recently with him at the Westland meeting (at Greymouth), at Reefton. Kaikoura. and at Reefton he recorded 2.16 for a mile. Worthy Need is owned by the Hokitika sportsman. Mr. J. Taylor.

CANTERBURY TROTS.

MEETI NG POSTPONED

CHRISTCHURCH. May 28

The Canterbury Park Trotting Club's winter meeting, which was to have been held to-morrow, has been postponed until next Saturday, because the track is not considered to lie in a fit condition for racing. As soon as the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter meeting was concluded, the grounds committee I decided to recondition the track and to replace the soil on a big portion of the course. Thousands of loads of soil were deposited on the course, and while fine weather may have givjen the custodian, Mr .1. Higbsted, a [reasonable opportunity to get the track in order, the weather settled all chance of a good surface being provided. The wet weather and the

peculiar nature of the soil have made matters doubly difficult. and the officials of the chib are not prepared to risk the lives of horsemen and horses in racing in going they have not. been accustomed to.

The meeting lias been postponed until Saturday next. .June 5. and it is possible that a further postponement will be made to .June 12. If the track is not then in condition, it is reported the meeting will lie abandoned.
