HAIRCUTTING CHARGES
[TO THE EDITOR.] Sir, —I notice that the barbers have decided to raise the price of hair cutting from 1/3 to 1/6 as from Monday, April 19. I think it is about time that we took a stand in this matter of what I think is profiteering. I for one am not going to be fleeced by a few individuals who think they can put the price up. Fancy paying so much for a hair cut (ten minutes), nearly as much as the average wage earner has to work an hour for. Over 25 per cent rise, this is certainly a case that should be placed before the Minister of Industries. I suppose the same old argument will be put forward, viz., 40 hour week and restoration of wages. I fail to see where wages have gone up 25 per cent. I notice that all the barbers’ shops in this town, run tobacconist’s shops in conjunction with the hair dressing saloons, and believe me they don’t run these at a loss. Because wool has gone up, it is no reason that the two legged sheep should be sacrificed. When the cow cockies raised the price of milk, II counteracted by buying condensed milk, and F don’t think I am the only one who did this. Now men, don’t be sheep, get your hair cut, but not by any profiteers. I would say to the men on the wharf, surely you can find one man to cut your hair, and the same to the Railway men. Twenty of us decided this afternoon not to go near a barber’s shop; as there are two of us who will do the hair cutting, and we are going to do it for nothing. I am etc. GREEN OR YELLOW,
