TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping MEETINGS TO COMEApril 17 —Whangarei. April 17 —Waimate. April 17, 19 —Nelson. April 24.—South Canterbury. April 24, 26 —Marlborough. April 29, May I—Oamaru. May B—Amberley.8—Amberley. & May 8, 12 —Hawke’s Bay . May 12, 15 —Egmont. May 12 —Ashburton County . May 12 —Southland. May 12 —Bay of Islands, at Pukekohe. May 12, 15—Otaki-Maori. May 15 —Waipa. May 20, 22—South Canterbury. May 22—Carterton. May 22, 24 —Waikato. May 29—Foxton.

For Otautau: The Phalaris horse Salmagundi, purchased at the Sydney sales for 600 gs. by Wright, Stephenson and Company, Ltd., was secured on behalf of Mr. A. Chisholm, who will have him to mate with Glentruin and other mares at his Otautau stud.

For Marlborough: West Coast-trained horses who appear among the nominations for the Marlborough Racing Club’s meeting to be held on April 24 and 26, are: — Potent,* Gas Mask, Back Lead,- Supreme Court, Delium, Bon Tray, and Arena.

Did Not Train On: A second to Paper Slipper in the Dunedin Guineas indicated a u’seful career for Epic, the son of Iliad and Eulalie, but like the rest of this brilliant mare’s progeny, he has- failed to train on. He is to be put aside for six months or longer.

A Likely Sort: A likely-looking maiden in Rahotahi carried Mr F. S. Easton’s sky blue and black hoops at Manawatu. He is a well-grown colt by .Lackham from Merry Sarto, so he. is> a. halfbrother to Manawatu. and Silent Acre. Rahotahi showed a lot of pace, but was not in condition to run on. He will improve.

Sold to Trainer: Acceptable has been sold by Mr. R. J. Murphy to his trainer, T. R. George, and the Tea Tray gelding raced in his new colours at Awapuni last week. Acceptable ran well at Wairarapa, suggesting that he should soon win a race, but he did not improve. George’s outlay, however, was not great, and Acceptable has only to win a race to return his purchase price.

A Valuable Producer: , Quadrilateral has proved a profitable mare for Elderslie Stud. Her last four yearlings sold at auction realised the following prices:—Homer, 550 gs; Rob Roy, l f 4sogs; Nightingale, 800 gs; and Homer’s brother,- purchased by Mr. J. S. Brunton last week, l,Boogs. An aggregate of 4,600g5.--for four from one mare is thoroughly satisfactory for any stud. Quadrilateral (Square Measure—Poltara, by Polymelus) was foaled in England in 192-*, and as a foal was so.d for 120 gs.

Monipere’s Chance': The Omoto-trained gelding, Monipere, must be given a good chance in the Waimate Cup, to-morrow, with only 7.8, one pound above the minimum to carry. Last season, in the Geraldine Cup, he beat Davolo by a neck in a slogging finish, with The Surgeon three lengths away third. Monipere is in great form, and though he beat nothing classy on the Coast circuit, it does not always pay to disregard Coast form.

Jumper Shows Promise: One of the most recent additions to , the jumping brigade at Ellerslie is Jaeldy Karb. He has been given several trials during the last couple of weeks, and, taken all round, his displays have been encouraging. This horse has not been in work very long, but he has made good progress, and is in the right order to commence a serious preparation. Jaeldy Karo is the Tight type to make good as a jumper, and the fact that he is a brother to Prince Lui, winner of the Great Northern Hurdles in 1931, is a ' further recommendation.

“Bad" Horses: A race ’notable for having always been won by a good horse is the Awapuni Cup. Among w.f.a. races, it is one of the most recent, but its short list of winners and non-winnei's is very impressive. Chortle, Desert Gold (three years in succession), Sasanof (twice), Marqueter, Amylhas, Thespian, Ballymena, Suggestion, Rapine, Commendation. Star Stranger, Vertigern, Nightmarch (twice), Autopay Silver Ring (twice), Greek Shepherd, and Wild Chase is the complete roster.

For India: The three-year-old Martara, recently purchased by Mr. Alex Higgins, was shipped to Sydney on Tuesday by the Awatea from Auckland on his way to India. Since arriving in Auckland before the Easter meetinr Martara has been under the care of R. S. Bagby" and he has been carefully let down in condition for his long trip. Much interest will be centred in ti.e future of Matara, who won rapid promotion from the time he opened his winning account in the Spring, and if he follows in the footsteps of Soultline, Karapoti, Heremia, and Kahapa, he should prove a further advertisement for New Zealand-bred stock.

Smoke Screen: When Smoke Screen won the Sires Produce Stakes at Awapuni on Saturday it made his record read five wins out of seven starts. The son of Limond —Curtain has already collected in stake money £l2OO for Mr Russell Grace, a member of the committee of the Wanganui Jockey Club, who paid GOOgns for the gelding at the Trentham yearling sales last year. Neither Francis Drake nor Haughty Winner ran up to expectations, but Smoke Screen won in a style which suggests that he is probably the best two-year-old of the season. • All going well ’with him in the interim the son of Limond should furnish into a slashing three-year-old. Trotting MEETINGS TO COME April 17— Manawatu. April 24 —Auckland. April 27 —Marlborough. May I—Kaikoura.1 —Kaikoura. May B—Waikato. May B—Oamaru.8 —Oamaru. May 12, 15 —Forbury Park. May 29 —Canterbury Park. June 12 —Ashburton.. June 19, 23 —Auckland. Overdue Win: All. Special registered his first success for just on seven years when he won the Parawai Handicap at Thames. He was solidly supported, and, nicely handled by G. T. Mitchell, junr.. came away over the last furlong to win comfortably. All Special had previously raced well this season to gain place money, and his victory was well deserved. Show? Promise: A novice that impressed as likely

to improve -as the result of the racing he is having was Guide Peter, who was a. competitor in the Hikutaia Handicap at Thames. He was twelfth fancy in the betting, but showed a nice turn of speed in the middle stages. Guide Peter, who is by Peter Bingen from Tranquil, may be worth watching in his next few outings.

An Improver: Stylish Boy, a well-bred three-year-old by Grattan Loyal—Highstepper, has a reputation for speed, and in the big field in the Improvers’ Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday he finished fourth after doing a good share of the pacemaking. Highstepper is by Logan Pointer —Fancy Girl, by Velox from Verity, by Vancleve, and’ is a sister to useful pacers in Eugene de Oro, 2.105, and Mary de Oro.

Should Not be Long: The splendid performance registered by Grattan Girl in acting as run-ner-up to Transfer in the Puriri Handicap at Thames, when making her first appearance in public, augurs well for the prospects of the Grattan Loyal filly. She was produced in rare condition by F. J. Smith, and handled the heavy going in first-class, style. This filly is down to make her next appearance in the Devonport Handicap at the forthcoming Auckland meeting, and she only has to repeat the same form to take a. deal of beating.

Her First Success: After several disappointing efforts this season Bold Venture reached the winning list when she was first home in the Hikutaia Handicap at Thames. She was the chief selection, and, beginning smartly, was disputing the lead all the way, to take charge ahlf way down the running and hang on to gain the verdict, by a neck. Bold Venture is a solid-looking pacer by Great Parrish from Kewpie’s Bond and is trained at Mangere by J. T. Paul. She is not high-class, but should score again while she is on a loose mark.

Was Unlucky: One of the moist promising novices seen out at Thames was Sandupky. He was only having his second start and was inclined, to be nervous at tile barrier, with the result that he did not go away too well when the tapes were released, also receiving a. little interference in the first couple of furlongs. He made a great effort over the last couple of furlongs, and was staying on very solidly to get within a. neck and half a length of the winner, Bold Venture. Sandusky is a half-brother to that brilliant little pacer Bonny Azure, and. when he gains a little experience he should turn out a real good proposition.

A Prospect: Colonel Grattan, engaged in both light harness events at Waimate tomorrow, is a three-year-old gelding trained by V. Leeming for the Dunedin sportsman. Mr J. Richardson. At ‘the Cheviot meeting last month Colonel Grattan paced well over a mile and a-half in the Spotswood Handicap won by Bill Grattan, who registered 3.27 1-5 for a mile and ahalu \Colonel Grattan’s performance gave an indication that he will do better In the near future. By Grattan Loyal from Erin’s Pointer, Colonel Grattan is a fine stamp of pacer and in time will reach good class company. MANAWATU TROTS. TO-MORROW’S PROGRAMME.
