U.S.A. STRIKERS

400 MEN ARRESTED [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.! LOS ANGELES, February 25. The grand jury has voted 400 indictments charging the “stay-in” strikers in the Douglas aircraft plant with felonious conspiracy. It ordered their eviction and arrest. The authorities intend to use guns and tear gas. Covered by machine-guns, and surrounded by a heavily armed contingent of 350 law enforcement officers, the 400 strikers later submitted to arrest without resistance. They "were locked up in the county gaol. The strikers, who were armed with monkey wrenches and iron pipes, had threatened to throw a drum of inflammable paint and cause a fire which was capable of destroying the plant. The Douglas factory is working on a 19,000,000 dollar Government order. • STEEL INDUSTRY NEW YORK, February 26. The Pittsburgh correspondent of the “New York Times” says that the steel industry has begun a series of increases in. prices which are expected to be followed by another advance in wages, and the establishment of a five-dollar day for common labour. 1 The industry is determined to retain the “open shop,” and these wage increases, coupled with the strengthening of its employees’ representation plan, are expected to give the industry instrumentalities to counteract the drive for the, organisation of the workers, and prevent or minimise the threatened strike.
