The American destroyers Preston ‘and Smith arrived this morning, and berthed at the naval base. Launched in April last year, they are the most modern vessels of their type in the United States fleet, and still in the official secrets list. No cameras are allowed aboard. The captains paid official calls to Commander Tinley on the Philomel. The vessels were commissioned at San Francisco in October, •after trials, and left for Honolulu, Pago Pago and Auckland. They will leave on Thursday next for Sydney. Each is armed with five five-inch guns, and 12 torpedo tubes, and are capable of 35 knots. Each has two depth charge chutes at the stern. Each carries nine officers and 162 ratings. Hospitality lias been arranged by the Government and citizens.

The Australian Associated Press understands that an agreement is now reached between the British and Australian Government in connection with the International Meat Conference. It was intended to hold the conference in ■January, but it is believed that the Commonwealth’s reservations delayed preparations. It is now hoped to meet in London before Easter. Australia and New Zealand as the most important meat producers, will be separately represented. United Kingdom delegates will represent the smaller Dominions. AUCKLAND, February 26. By the Monterey from Los Angeles to-day. came two new United States Consuls. Mr. J. G. Greeninger replaces Mr. Walter Boyle at Auckland. He is single, and was formerly at Karachi (India). He was due to arrive on Christmas Day, but was delayed by the Pacific Coast shipping strike. Mr. Glion Curtis junior, becomes Vice Consul at Wellington. The rivers’ rise through the incessant rain during the past two days, resulted in heavy flooding of rivers in Golden Bay. Takaka township became isolated yesterday afternoon. when flood walers made road traffic impossible. Similar conditions continued this morning. There were no bread or meat deliveries outside the township to-day. In a dip in the road at Waitapu, between the Globe Hotel and Takaka River bridge, there was about 12 feet of water this morning, while five feet of water flowed across the main street, near the private hospital. Several houses near the dairy factory were evacuated. The rainfall in 48 hours up to 9 a.m. to-day, was 5.75 inches. Later in the morning, rain ceased. There are indications that the flood waters are receding.
