OBITUARY
MR. S. W. S. STRONG The death occurred at Greymouth, this morning, of Mr. Sydney W. S. Strong, who was recently appointed as New Zealand supervisor .of the Gold Prospecting Scheme, under the Department of Labour. .The late Mr. Strong was a son of Colonel W. .J. Strong, C.8.E., and Mrs. Strong, of Dunedin, being a native of that city, aged 36 years. He received his early education at Outram, under his • father, who was headmaster there. From 1914 to 1917 he attended the Otago Boys’ High School and subsequently proceeded to the School of Mines of the Otago University, graduating in 1924, with the diploma-of land and mine surveying and 0.U.). His first appointment was as patrolling geologist to the Taranaki Oil Fields Ltd., and he held that position for about six years, doing geological survey work in Taranaki and various other parts of the North Island. WheTi the' Company’s prospecting operatibnsceased about six years ago, he came to reside in Greyinouth, being engaged op. geological survey work for the Greymouth Harbour Board. 'With the inauguration of the Unemployment Board’s Gold Prospecting Scheme he received the appointment of Ehgin-eer-in-Charge of the Scheme in the Grey District and subsequently, of the whole of the West Coast. With the transferring of the mining schemes to the control of the Department of Labour, the late Mr. Strong was appointed Engineer-in-Charge for the whole of New Zealand, with headquarters at Wellington, and he was about to take up residence in Wellington when he was taken ill several weeks .ago, and underwent an operation. His enthusiasm for the prospecting scheme and the conscientious manner in which he attempted to visit all prospectors in the district at regular intervals, to direct their work, affected his health. His only relaxation was debating, and he was a member of the United Debating Club. He is survived by his wife, who is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Milne, “Stonewall”, Redcliffs, Waimate, and a /graduate of the Dental School of the Otago University, and two young! children. He also .leaves his parents, and one sister, Annie, of the staff of the Hamilton High School. The funeral will take place on Sunday afternoon, at the Karoro Cemetery.
