PIRATE KING WINS WELL. [special to “stab.”] HAMILTON, February 20. Thurwind and Huntsman’s Chorus got the jump-out from a walk-in start, for the Trial Stakes, but within the first quarter, Fax* Land had settled down in front of Pirate King, Huntsman’s Chorus, Very Glad, and Bronzette. At the half-way, stage, Pirate King took charge, and he won going away from Young Paddon, who finished very strongly to beat Very Glad by a head. Cometarium was a neck away, and then came Huntsman’s Chorus, who showed no heart at the finish, Thurwind, . .Toyzell, and Far Land. . Bronzette was second to Pirate King into the straight, and she should soon improve. The winner, a good racer, was having his third race, and is a three-year-old by King Lu from Santa Fe. Won All the Way. Calcutta was always in front in the Frankton Hurdles, although his jumping, at times, was chancy. At the straight, he was attended by Modern Maid, Curlew, English Night, and Sandy Dix. The first-named two rose at the last hurdle together, and Modern Maid got her head in front, but Calcutta came on to win in the last stride. English Night was ono and a-half lengths away, another head in front of Sandy Dix, with Lady Ruler and Rnaform next.. Wild Flower Easily. Wildflower, won the Juvenile Handicap easily, jumping out cleanly he ■was followed by Nuclei, Barricade and Trilliarch. Nuclei fell after going about half a furlong, and Raceline ran up from the rear to second place, Wild Flower and Raceline being chased into the straight by Airam, Girl Pat, and Barricade. Airam and

Girl Pat filled the minor places. Bachelor King came fast into fourth place, and Barricade and Royal Vaals were noticed making a late run on the rails. A Great Finish. The Storey Memorial Handicap provided one of the best finishes: seen for a long time. Running into the back, Velocipede stopped, suddenly, having broken down, and' seriously interfered with Shy, who lost his rider, while several others were checked, but only slightly. Entering the back, Royal Appellant, and Gay Broney were together in .front, clear of Vera Acre, Lagoon and Tiger Gain; also in line were Tybalt, Scotland, and Dark Shadow. On the home turn, Royal Appellant , Gay Broney and Vera Acre were inclose order from Lagoon, Tybalt, Tiger Gain, Mazir (wide out), and Scotland. Lagoon looked a winner at the half-distance, but Scotland charged up to win by a short head, with Tybalt a neck away. Then came Gay Broney, Tout le Monde, Master Briefly, Tiger Gain, Royal Appellant and Vera Acre. The m<jst improved were Gay Broney, Tout le Monde, and Vera Acre, while disappointments were Mazir, Dark Shadow, who seems temporarily to have gone off, and 1 Master Brierly, whose brilliant track work led to raised hopes. Decisive Victory. Merial, the win favourite, was one of four badly away in the Linley Handicap, losing all chance. Jan Ridd soon pushed to the front, and! led into the home run from Diacquedoon, Little Artist, Surella, Sir Tommy and' Prince Rangi. Jan Ridd won decisively from Little Artist, who paid double figures. Prince - Rangi, an improving three-year-old, was- a fair third, with May. Song, Suj’tella, Waitafca and Haile Boy next. The well-supported Paso Robles was: never dangerous. . Hot Favourite Beaten. Kilonsa was backed as a good thing for the Puiketaha Handicap, but he succumbed narrowly to Debham, who ran up to Trentham form. Debham and Mangukaha went at once to the front, and led across the top from Kilonsa, and Pukeko. These were in the same order, entering the) straight, ahead of Kilberis’ and Black Friar. Kilonsa moved out at the distance, but was at once pursued by Debham, who won a sustained duel by a head. Gay Rose came from the ruck for a third, and then came. Pukeko, Black Friar, Star Artist and Mainland. Best of His Career. Whirling gave R. T. Reid another long-priced winner in the President’s Handicap, the Whirlwind gelding run-, ning the best race of his career to beat Deficit/ who looked likely at the half-distance. Golden Sheila and Deficit made play at the start, from’ Whirling, and Impasto, and these four wert- attended at the straight entrance, by Clessamor, MataHari, and Round Up (on the rails). Whirling won by a length, a neck behind Deficit were Golden Sheila, and King Rey, who dead-heated for third. King Rey finished very fast. ■ After the placed horses, came Round Up, Impasto, Triune, and Gold Mission. Black Musk .Wins Well. 1 'Black Musk and Erndaie were first and second when the Beerescourt Handicap field had settled down, and they finished as named. * Racemosus. was third, with another bare length to King Theo, and then Lady Siegfried, ■Winlona, and Gay Streak. The winner fought on gamely, and should win again soon.

NEW SIRE FOR N.Z. FASHIONABLE ENGLISH BLOOD. [special to “star.”] AUCKLAND, February 22. Baffles, a six-year-old horse, by Blandford from Waffles (by Buckwheat), has been purchased by Mrs G. Carrington, as a stud sire, and will arrive in New Zealand about March 3. He will be quartered in Waikato. Blandford sired Bahram (winner of the Triple Crown), Trigo and Windsor Lad (the Derby and the St. Leger), Blenheim (the Derby). Uid'apur (the Oaks), and Campanula (the One Thousand Guineas). Blenheim is the sire of Mahmoud, another Derby colt. Waffles is the dam of Manna, and Sandwich, both St. Leger winners, and Manna also of the Two Thousand Guineas, while he sired Colombo, an'bther 2000 gs. winner. Baffles is apparently unraced. WOTAN AND LE GRAND. [special to “star.”] AUCKLAND, February 22. Wotan and Le Grand will leave Auckland in the Awatea on Wednes day, for Sydney. The Melbourne Cui winner is said to be in good heart. The New Zealand-bred colt Gold Rod regained the limelight when, after appearing to have little chance of running into a place, he brilliantly pounced on the leaders to win the Fqturity Stakes at Caulfield. Pamelas seemed to have the race won, when leading comfortably into the straight, with Young Idea making a valiant effort to catch him. Gold Rod’s prospects were regarded as hopeless, but he made a briliant dash which carried him to half a length victory.

His performance is a record for a horse of his age. Many three-year-olds have won the Futurity, but none with 9.4. Ammon Ra, who, like Gold Rod, was ridden by McCarten, won with 9.3. •

Heavy rain militated against fast time for to-day’s race. Gold Rod is owned, is trained, and was ridden by the former New Zealanders, E. J. Watt, George Price, and M. McCarten respectively.

Lochlee, under a heavy impost of 9.7, was not disgraced by finishing fifth in the Alma Stakes. Northwind, the Caulfield Cup win, ner, won the Woodcliff Handicap so impressively that he has enhanced his prospects for the Australian Cup. Treasure Trove advanced her record to seven seconds out of her last eight starts, when she filled that position behind Afghan in the St. Clair Trial. Cynical Kid and Cape Lilock were unplaced in the Stanley Steeples. Principal results were:—

Alma Stakes, two-year-olds, six furlongs.— Nightgqard 8.1 (H. Skidmore) 1; Caesar 8.6 (D. Munro) 2; Hua 8.0 (F. Dempsey) 3. Twenty-three started, including Birthday Boy. Thirteen started, including Greenhorn and Viceroy. Won by a length and aquarter; a length and a-half. Time, 191.

Futurity Stakes, seven furlongs.— Gold Rod 9.4 (M. McCarten) 1; Pamelus 9.8 (W. Elliot) 2; Young Idea 10.1 (E. Bartie) 3. Great Legend and Heroic’s Pride were scratched. AVebster) 2; Great Legend 8.8 (A. Reed) 3. Thirteen started. Won by a length and a-half. Time 1.131. The New Zealander, A. Driscoll., who rode Bonnie Rollupc in the steeple, being narrowly beaten by Richmond Tiger, was 'suspended from riding for three months after the race for causing interference with Richmond Tiger. Critics warmly applaud Gold Rod’s return to form. The “Sunday Times” says that McCarten considers Gold Rod put up a better performance than Ammon Ra. Gold Rod had none of the luck of the running and covered more ground than Ammon Ra. NEW ZEALAND COLT WINS SYDNEY, February 20. At the AVarwick Farm races, results were: —

Ingleburn Nursery Handicap for two-year-olds. Five and a-half furlongs.—Sturdee 6.13 (D. Ashmore) 1; Normandy 9.0, (A. Knox) 2; Publicity 8.6, (H. Hickey) 3. A 71b. allowance for his apprentice rider reduced his weight to 6.13. D. Ashmore is one of the most promising apprentices in Sydney. He has been riding onlj r a few weeks, and he had three wins this week. Kinsfolk was third in the February Handicap, in which Limoux, Sir Regent, and Jubilee Singer were unplaced. RECORDS BROKEN. [special tu “stab.”] CHRISTCHURCH, February 20. The New Brighton Trotting Club held its Autumn meeting in glorious weather on Saturday before a record attendance, which included the Prime Minister and party. A feature of the racing was the splendid performance of the American trotter Airflow, who defeated a good field of pacers in 4.28 for two miles. Reporter established a track race record of 3.14 2-5 foi v a mile and a-half. Worthy King’s mile in 2.8 1-5 was a saddle record for the course. Gerfalcon’s Third Win:

The Improvers’ Handicap provided quite an interesting race, and a grand display of trotting by the three-year-old Gerfalcon, who was handled with excellent judgment by the New Brighton reinsman, L. Frost. It marked the gelding’s third win in his last five starts. Cracksman was actually the quickest to begin, but very soon he was supplanted by Esther, who led at the end of two furlongs from Gay Crusader, Royal Parrish and Royal Romance. When half a mile had been covered the order was Esther, Gay Crusader, Royal Parrish, Gerfalcon, Royal Romance, Cracksman, and Gaynor. The field 1 was well strung out, but rqnning down the back several horses made a forward move and, rounding the top turn, a good number of horses were in the running. Royal, Romance and Gaynoi; joined the leader, Esther, as the straight was entered and at the distance Gerfalcon appeared on the scene. A good race home .saw Gerfalcon hold his own comfortably, to win from Royal Romance, who just held on long enough to beat Esther, while finishing at intervals were Gaynor, Sphinx, Prince Harvester, Mother’s Boy, and Renegade.

The winner was always nicely placed, and' was not hurried to hold his place in the early stages. His solid trotting over the last half-mile showed him to be above the average, and with age he may develop into another champion produced by Durbar Lodge.

It was refreshing to find a young trotter defeating a field of older and more experienced pacers, and Royal Romance showed a return to form by running second, a place that was almost thrown away. Royal Romance is back to form, and a win should not be far off. Gaynor was well in the picture until the final stages, and Prince Harvester proved the best of the back markers.

Accident Spoils Race: The Belfast Handicap was completely spoilt by an accident after three furlongs had been covered. Savoldi tangled and fell, and Intrigue, Sans Peur, and Heather Queen came down and badly interefered with more tljan half the' field. After the field had covered half a mile, Post Haste and Our Fay were out in front clear of Boltaire, Warpath, Tarn, and Loyal Direct, while Fine Art and Dundee picked up ground in the back stretch. Rounding the top turn, the order was the same, and at the distance Warpath and Boltaire drew out. In a good finish Warpath lasted the better and scored a clear-cut victory from Boltaire, while Fine Art, who was not persevered with when all chance of victory was gone was in third place ahead' of Post Haste, Starwyn, Loyal Direct, Tarn, Our Fay and Dundee. All the placed horses paid good dividends, especially Boltaire, who returned more than a quarter of a century, while the accident probably affected the result. Warpath finished with plenty of dash, while Boltaire went his best race to date. Fine Art’s showing was an especially good one, and until the last two furlongs Dundee was going great guns.

Grace McElwyn Wins: Driven with the best of judgment and enjoying the best run of the race, Grace McElwyn won decisively the Denton Memorial Handicap after fairly outstaying Big Author, who had acted as pace-maker throughout. The pace from the outset was not fast, and Big Author taking the lead carried on from Isabel Derby, Grace McElwyn, Raydus, and Queen Author, and with half the journey covered Big Author still led from Grace McElwyn, Recess, Isabel Derby, Raydus, Gunfire, and Queen Author, while Llewellyn’s Pride, Gold County, and Tempest were bringing up the rear. The three last-named did not make a forward move until half a mile from home, at which stage Recess elected to tackle Big Author in the lead, and the pair came into the straight ahead of Grace McElwyn and Raydus. It was only a furlong from home that Big Author disposed of Recess, and at this stage Grace McElwyn issued her challenge. Big Author was beginning to feel the strain, and his finish was not a very resolute one. This is easily understood, however, for Recess in her challenge fully extended the big pacer, and Grace McElwyn had the race run to suit her, and came with well-sustained dash. Big Author was far from disgraced. He is a really good pacer. Queen Author narrowly defeated Isabel Derby for third money, and while Tempest and Gold Country went fine races, they had too much ground to make up over the last half mile, which was run at a great .pace. Llewellyn’s Pride had had enough long before the finish, and none of the others were in the firing line at the finish. A Splendid Trotter: A performance of outstanding merit was registered by Airflow who won the Stewards’ Handicap with apparent ease. She was as quick to begin as any of the pacers, and lying in a handy position throughout she fairly hurried Play On and the others in the run down the straight. Play On held the lead for a furlong when On Parade dashed to the front and quickly bstablished a four lengths lead from Play On. Red Flyer, Kibo, Valdor, Ciro, Airflow, and Navy Blue, with Mystery Yet some lengths away. By the time half the journey was covered the field was racing in close order, with On Parade still setting the pace, and with half a mile to go Airflow moved up and followed On Parade and Play On into the straight. Play On fought gamely, but Airflow was altogether too good and won easily, while Red Flyer just beat Mystery Yet for third place. Then followed On Parade, Navy Blue, and Ciro.

The winner went steadily from start to finish, and the merit of her performance may be judged by her time, 4.28, five seconds better than the big race was run in. The American mare has developed with age; 'her future will be eagerly watched. Play On, aftei’ his hard race of the previous week, again went a. solid race while Red Flyer struggled on gamely after apparently being well beaten. On Parade failed badly and Valdor, Navy Blue and Ciro were not of class to perform successfully amongst good horses. Another Big Dividend:

Backers received another set-back in the Eclipse Handicap, when the Tasmanian-bred and owned pacer, Icevus won in hollow fashion from Red Ranger, who had acted as pacemaker throughout. In the early stages Red Ranger took the lead, with Heather Queen, Alpine Prince, Icevus, and Chateau following. Red Ranger still caiyied 1 on the running going down the back, and the field was well strung out. Heather Queen broke and dropped out of the race at the half/mile post, and Red Ranger held command at the straight entrance from Alpine Prince, Icevus and' Toorak. The last-named did not run on well, and while Red Ranger fought on gamely Icevus came away in the last 50 yards, to win very nicely. Alpine Prince was third, ahead of Toorak, Aircraft, Lucess, and Hidden Charm. The win was a popular one for the Tasmanian owner, Mr H. Rudd, who had brought other pacers in Evicus and Emilius AVay to New Zealand. Icevus, whose only previous wins had been attained in minor events in Tasmania, won in most impressive style. Red Ranger found the task of pacemaking just too much for him, and Toorak who appeared to have a chance two furlongs from home did not finish on in the resolute manner expected. Olive King met trouble in the early part and was pulled up, Molly Direct did not stay on, and De La Paix and the remainder never threatened danger. A Close Finish:

Two good trotters in Captain Bolt and Bittersweet fought out a close finish in the Autumn Handicap after a most interesting race.

Guy Hugo broke badly at the start, and Indolent went away with a good break from Captain Bolt, Bittersweet, Enigma, Helen’s Bay, and Kuini, and when Header joined the leaders the field raced in close order for the greater part of the journey. _ Half a mile from home Helen’s Bay issued a challenge, but a bad break cost her many lengths. She came with rare dash over the later part, but Captain Bolt took the lead in the straight, only to be challenged by Bittersweet. The pair settled down to a hard finish and Captain Bolt, staying on the better had a half length’s advantage as the post was passed. Helen’s Bay was in third place ahead of Indolent, Kuini and Enigma. Captain Bolt commenced smartly, trotted steadily, and always in a good position he gave a splendid display of trotting in a hard finish. He will add further to his record on Canterbury courses. Bittersweet was well handled throughout, and while she showed gameness in her finish she did not; stay well enough to win. Helen’s Bay is not yet a finished trotter, and on this occasion she met trotters of class. Guy Hugo gave a poor display, Little Reta was never dangerous, and Kuini, Enigma and Header were outclassed.

An Exciting' Race: The Flying Handicap, one of the fast class contests, staged by the New Brighton Trotting Club, provided a race worthy of the occasion. George Rey was the only one slow to begin and at once Double Great shot to the front and attempted to slow down the pace. O. E. Hooper, however, had other ideas on the matter, and at once sent Village Guy to brighten up the pace. At a good rate the field travelled with Morello and Pot Luck, following the leaders, while in good positions were Recess, Reporter, Young Frank and Raydus. When the straight was reached the field spread across the course, and a

great race resulted. Double Great still held the lead and appeared to be going comfortably, but then Morello issued a challenge and appeared a likely winner. Double Great faded out, and Reporter put in a very telling run, while Tot Luck joined the issue. Reporter carried on his run to beat Morello by a narrow margin, while Morello effectively disposed of Pot Luck and Double Great in the race record time for the coufse of 3.14 2-5. This was another very popular win for Reporter has been a most consistent performer, and he carried the confidence of a big army of Methven supporters. Morello went one of the best races of his career and fought in the gamest manner possible, but the fast pace found Pot Luck unable to carry oh a very fast run he commenced from the distance post. Double Great lost no friends by his display, but the task of pace-making found him out in the last bit. In Saddle: From start to finish the Final Handicap was a race full of interest, but it resulted in a very decisive win for the black pacer Plutus, who has shown, steady improvement during the season, and this time was capably handled by M. Stewart. Chenaway and Plutus , each took a hand at pace-making over the early part, but with half a mile covered Worthy King assumed the Ibad, with Plutus, Admiral Wrack, Racketeer and Golden Cross handy. Worthy King was still in front a hundred yards from home, but when Plutus Was given his lead he quickly put the result beyond doubt. It was a decisive win, and the time, 2.111-5 from a 2.16 mark, accounted for the. displays Of some of the. others. Worthy King’s effort bordered on the sensational, for taking the lead at th© half-mile post he ran second in 2.8 4-5, a race record for the mile saddle race at New Brighton. Golden Cross, Admiral Wrack, Rackateer and Royal Comrade were under a hard ride over the last part/ and all finished well.
