HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. [OUB OWN COBBESPONDENT.I HOKITIKA, February 19. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: Mr G. A. Perry (Mayor), Crs T. W. Duff, A. R. Elcock, E. L. Park, E. Teichelmann, and G. Heinz. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. H. L. Michel and A. H. Thompson. Before commencing the business of the meeting the Mayor moved a vote of condolence to the widow of the late Mr W. Jeffries, a former councillor.—This was passed, members standing. It was decided to uncover the pipeline ' to the reservoir in preparation for re-piping owing to the unsatisfactory condition of present pipes. An application woujd be made to the County Council to have the Hau Hau Road drain cleared out to drain pipe route. The Foreman’s report was read'and approved. Correspondence was received' as follows:— From the New Zealand Refrigerating Co., advising that ttye following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika: —December, 1936, 56 sheep, 27 lambs; January, 1937, 44 sheep, 9 lambs. From Picnic Committees asking for the use of Cass Square as follows: — Blackball Picnic Committee, Saturday, February 27'; Grey Watersiderk’ Picnic Committee, Saturday, March 6; Brunner Miners and Combined Schools’ Committee, Saturday, March 13.—Granted.

From Mr F. W. Fane per William Wilson, agent, application for subdivision of section 3249, Revell Street, into two equal parts. Each moiety will contain 12.71 perches and have a frontage of 51.74 links. Houses have been built on the separate parts.— Agreed.

From A. E. Stephens, application for sub-division of sections 1391,1392, Park and Sale Streets. Each section will contain 32 perches, with a frontage of one chain. —Agreed. From the Sanitary Inspector, Greymouth, and also petition signed by W. H. Steel and 12 others regarding nuisance caused by a watercourse having no outlet in Rolelston Street or Sale Street, also the open water channel in front of Mr Steel’s residence in Weld Street.—Referred to Public Works Committee for action. From Mrs Ida J. Stapleton, Sale Street, application to iustal a septic tank on the north part of sections 596, 598 and 600 —Granted, subject to Health Department’s approval. From W. C. Campbell, application for domestic water service connection to section 795, Fitzherbert Street.— Approved. From H. B. Preston, application for domestic water service connection to section 824, Brittan Street.—Approved. From H. B. Praston, atpplication for permission to install a septic tank on section 824, Brittan Street.—Granted, subject to Health Department’s approval. From Jean Hall, application to install a domestic water service connection to section 2368, Revell Street. Approved. From J. J. Williams. Hampden Street, asking that spoil from drain

Steel Pipe and Tank Co.. Ltd., asking in regard to contract “13" for Sin. pipes whether the Council is satisfied that the N.Z. manufacturers received due consideration. — Council quite satisfied. From the Secretary, Employment Division, Department of Labour, advising that the 12 per cent, subsidy offered was on the understanding that, pipes would' be of New Zeland manufacture and asking why New Zealand pipes could not have been used lot’ the job. From the Canterbury Progress League asking that in regard to hawkers and itinerant salesmen, that the Council enforce the by-law in regard to the licensing of such persons. —Council to do all in its power to enforce by-law. i From Hon. From the Medical Officer of Health, Christchurch, forwarding copy of the camping ground regulations, 1936, and .asking whether .the Council desires this regulation to be gazetted as applicable to the Borough of Hokitika. —Def erred‘till next meeting. From the District Engineer of New Zealand Railways intimating that in regard to the temporary water supply at the Kanieri dredge that his Department is prepared to supply and install a half-inch meter and pay at the rate of 1/3 per 1,000 gallons of water consumed. —Agreed. From the Commissioner of Taxes, asking regarding Hokitika Water Supply Loan, 1936, £lB,OOO, whether the Council would undertake the collection of tax on the interest payable to debenture-holders, or whether the Council would authorise him. to collect the tax.—Approved. ‘ From Mr G. Raine, Revell Street, pointing out the unsatisfactory position in regard' to drain running through his property,, and asking whether the Council would have some improvement made.—Chairman' of Works Committee to report. From the. Secretary of the Canter-bury-Westland Adjustment Commission, notification of'adjustment under section 29 of the Mortgagors and Lessees Rehabilitation Act, 1936, in respect to B. A. Haussmann to be taken on March 9, 1937. From A. R. Elcock, notification of .section 29 Mortgagors and Lessees Rehabilitation Act, 1936, in respect of G. L. Shannon. From Ted Williams, application for metalling at his frontage in Park Street.—Granted. From Stewarts and Lloyds Ltd., advising that in their quotation for the Sin. pipes they asked for sixteen weeks for completion; they now find that ‘they will be unable to complete the contract until approximately twenty weeks from the date of acceptance, and asking that the Council agree to the extension. —Agreed. From J. C. Mact'arlane, regarding straightening of pipe line and making recommendations. —Adopted. From Mrs Kerr, senr., asking for remission of rates. —Referred to the

Town Clerk. A letter was received from KanieriHokitika Sawmills, Ltd., regarding the raising of the railway line on Gibson’s Quay, declining responsibility for raising the line, but offering to carry stone for protection works free if necessary. Crs. Duff and Teichelmann and Inspector Gaylor were appointed to go into the matter of defined pedestrian crossings at street corners. With regard to the taking of sand from the sea beach, the question is to be referred to the Borough solicitor for an opinion. A motion of thanks was passed to Mr E. Heron, of New South Wales, for a coloured photograph, which he has presented to the Council. Financial statement: —Receipts £1035/10/4, expenditure £951/5/7. Accounts amounting to £l2OB/0/11 were passed for payment. Abattoirs’ report:—Stock slaughtered for the month of January:—47 cows, 16 heifers, 61 bullocks, 2 calves, 246 sheep, 129 lambs, 17 pigs; condemned, 1 cow, 1 sheep. Fees collected for month £76/18/-; fees tor corresponding month last, year, £BO/8/-.
