Mr N. S. Dew arrived 1 yesterday from Christchurch. Mr Sinclair Trotter returned yesterday, from Wellington. Miss E. Penhalluriack will leave tomorrow, on return to Christchurch. Miss X. Compton loft, last evening, on. return to Christchurch. Mr J. Mcßrearty left, last evening, on return to Dunedin. Mr A. Bayley, Dunedin, arrived yesterday on a visit to his. parents, Mr and Mrs F. Bayley.

Miss O. Flew-ellen, Tetaho, retulrned yesterday, from a visit to Christchurch. Miss P. Andrews, masseuse, at the Grey Hospital, has' been appointed to the staff of the Hawera Hospital. Miss E. Robertson will return tomorrow, from a holiday visit to Port Chalmers. Miss I. M. Dalton will return tomorrow, from a holiday visit to Methven. Mr. and Mrs. T. Learmont, who have been visiting Christchurch, where Mr. Learmont attended the engineers’ conference, will return to-morrow.

Miss Dorothy Thwaites will return to Greymouth on Tuesday next, after a holiday visit to Wellington, Christchurch and Camara. Mr W. Moore, Cobden, returned yesterday, from Wellington. He was accompanied by Mr C. Moore, of Wellington. Mr R. McGillivray, Fields Superintendent, Agricultural Department, will arrive, this afternoon, on a visit to the West Coast. Guests at Revington’s include: — Mr and Mrs Herbert Elworthy, Miss 1 E. Elworthy (Timaru), Mr H. E. Farr, Mr F. L. Aley (Wellington), Mr L. G. Frew, Mr W. Holland, Mr A. B. Ellis (Christchurch). Mr Thomas Browne, of Wairoa, Hawke’s Bay, is visiting Greymouth, after an absence of Cl years. His father, the late Mr J. E. Browne, was connected with the. management of the “Greymouth Evening Star” in the early days of its publication, and Mr T. Browne is probably one of the oldest “Star” runners.

The death of Mr. A. M. Burns was mentioned by the chairman (Sir Henry Horton) in his statement to the anndal meeting of the New Zealand branch of the Empire Press Union at the Hermitage, Mt. Cook, and a vote of condolence with the relatives was passed. Sir Henry said that Mr. Burns was Neyv Zealand’s oldest and most esteemed newspaperman. He had been a valued supporter of the union, and for many years had served on the committee. He was an indefatigable worker a man of sound ability, andi his death was much lamented by all.— Press Association.

The resignation of Mr Andrew Messer, City’ Treasurer of Auckland, was announced at a meeting of the City Council last evening. The assistant Town Clerk, Mr T. W. M. Ashby, was appointed to succeed him. Mr D. L. Robinson, Internal Auditor and Checking Officer, was promoted to the position of assistant-Town* Clerk. Mr Messers resignation, which was rendered necessary" by" the state of his hfialth, was considered at. length by the Council in committee. Subsequently. in open council, the Finance Committee reported that Mr Messer had asked to be relieved of his duties as from March 4th. The Committee recommended that his resignation be accepted, -ami he he be granted twelve months’ leave, of absence, on half pay, —Press Assn.
