NELSON EDUCATION BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board was held on Monday last, at Nelson, all members being present with the exception of Mr. .F. A. Hamilton, who was excused from attendance. Accounts amounting to £14,732 were passed for payment. The Education Department approved of the establishment of a Household School at Cronadun. The chairman reported having accompanied the Minister of Education on a visit to Denniston and Burnett’s Face, in connection with the proposal to establish a central school at Denniston. The. Minister was sympathetic and the people of Burnett’s Face were, in favour of such an arrangement. Mr. Harkness moved that plans be prepared and an application forwarded to the Department for a grant. The secretary reported that an application for authority to acquire new site at Granity had been forwarded to the Minister. The suggested amalgamation of the Longford School with Murchison, was held over. The Board was asked by the Department to forward a projected building programme for works necessary in the next two years. The list was as follows, being placed in order of urgency, viz.:—Richmond, Foxhill, Brooklyn, Pokororo, Lower Moutere, Denniston, Motueka, Granity, Westport, Dovedale, Upper Moutere, Seddonville, Hope, Orinoco, Churchill, Inangahua Landing. It was pointed out that many of the buildings to be replaced were between 60 and 70~years old. The supplying of typewriters for District High Schools, the department advised would receive consideration in the near future. The Department also called attention of the Board that several School Committees had not increased the wages of caretakers to that received in 1931. out of the increased allowance they were now receiving. The Department advised the transfer of Mr. W. J. Boden, senior inspector to the Wanganui district, also that Mr. H. C. N. Watson of Wellington, was appointed in his place. The Senior Inspector presented the report of the recent proficiency examinations, viz., Public Primary Schools: Presented, 699; passed, 551 (78.8 per cent.); average age 13.6 years. Competency: Passed 105 (15 p.c.); Private Schools: Presented, 62; passed, 49; (79 per cent.); average age 13.5. Competency: Passed 10 (16.1 per cent.). Secondary and Technical: Presented, 7; passed, 3; (42.8 per cent.). Competency: Passed, 4; (57.1 per cent.)-. ’Special schools: Presented, 31; passed 23; (74.2 per cent.). Teachership appointments: —Takaka, A. C. Barr. 17 applicants, Head Teacher. Nelson Central, J. Masefield, four applicants, head teacher. Auckland Point, A. W. Alloo, transferred from Central, head teacher. Summerlea, Elgar T. White, four applicants, sole teacher.' Waimea West, Elizabeth E. Lublow, 16 applicants, sole teacher. Pangatotara, Mabel Stubbs, 8 applicants, sole teacher. Mawheraiti, Margaret L. Finnie, three applicants, sole teacher. Hampden Street, Phyllis'ivi. Watson, 5 applicants, assistant mistress. Motupipi, Kathleen Cleland, assistant mistress.
