Racehorse Owner Dead: A Sydney cablegram recorded the death, yesterday, of Oliver Osborne, a prominent grazier and racehorse owner. Beau Pere: The Son In Law horse, Beau Pere, who was bought in New Zealand recently, has arrived in Sydney, and has been taken to his new owner’s property at Scone.

Steeplechaser destroyed: The steeplechasei- Mayam, while being schooled at Invercargill yesterday morning, fell, on landing over a-brush fence, and broke a leg. He was destroyed. Blazon was his mate, and apparently the pair came into collision on landing. Mayam was a bay gelding by Tea Tray from Puttee, and last season had 18 starts for only one second and two thirds. , Omoto Youngster:

c. J. Walsh, the Omoto trainer, has nc minated his Dolomite —Fairy Tidings gelding, Gallant Prince, for the John Grigg Stakes, to be run at Ashburton next September. The youngster is nicely made, and* is showing some promise in his early education at Omoto. Brilliant Horseman: It is doubtful whether any'jockey rode with greater continuous success in India last season than W. Dillon. Three and four winners a day were not unusual with him. At'the Bombay meeting, at the end of the year there were two days on which he rode four winners, and on Western India Cup day, his notable opponents included Steve Donoghue, W. Sibbritt (whose brother did the West Coast Easter circuit last year), Gethin, E. Britt, and Marrable. On the da,y mentioned—December 20—three of his wins were for R. Higgins, the one of most importance being bn Titanium in the Western India Cup. He narrowly missed five wins on Boxing Day, as in one race he was defeated only a head on the exSydney horse, Glanely. Jumpers at Riccarton: Mr. D. H. Roberts’s champion jumper, Jolly Beggar, has completed plenty of solid work lately, and will be well forward when asked to .finish off his preparation. Rex Beale, who won the National Hurdles on him last year, is mentioned as Jolly Beggar’s pilot in his important engagements ahead. Monastic had his first schooling since being recommissioned, yesterday morning, and acQuitted himself well. He will be raced over the brush hurdles at Easter, and after that will return to steeplechasing. Thurina has rejoined Mrs. J. Campbell’s team, after a few months’ spell. The son of Thurnham is carrying plenty of conditions, and looks well.

Race Call at Woodville: A somewhat surprise entry for the maiden events at Woodville is the four-year-old Race Call, a northerner who has been very consistent in filling minor places during the last three months, including seconds to Clessamor, Orate, and Autumn Leaf, respectively in three starts on the Taranaki holidav circuit at his last three outings It is possible that Race Call was sold on the Taranaki trip, but no change of ownership has yet been notified. Race Call is a brown gelding by. a sire of untraced pedigree from the Quin Abbey —Brown Nell mare Quinette, who was bred by Mr. R. Hannon. He himself was bred by Mr. D. G. Casey, of Taihape, from whom he was a gift to Mrs. M. Casey whose colours he has so far carried in all his racing. Mrs. Casey’s horses are trained at Te Rapa by A. Winder, and another of them, Racette, a half-sister by Raceful to Race Call, has won several races during the last twelve months.

High-Priced Mares: Some high prices were paid for mares at the December sales at Newmarket, England. The chestnut Vingt Mille bred in 1930, was bought by Mr. Gallini for 4100gns. She is by the Derby winner, Papyrus, out of Treize, by The Tetrarch; she had been mated with Blenheim. Mr. E. Masurel paid 2200gns. for the six-year-old mare, Fox Tor, by Foxlaw out of Corrie, by Roi Herode and stinted to King Salmon . Mr. Frank Gilbert paid a similar price for the brown colt, Battle Song (1933), by Spion Kop out of Cradle Song, by Hurry On. Alpine Rose was bought by Mr. Clarence Hailey, on behalf of a Victorian (Australia) client for 2100gns. She is an eight-year-old chestnut mare by Phalaris from Snow Maiden, by The Tetrarch. Snow Maiden’s dam won the Irish Oaks and is a half-sister to the Leger winner, Caligada, by The Telrarch. Alpine Rose was said to be in foal to the Ascot Cup winner, Bosworth. sire of Boswell, winner of the Leger in 1936.

Remarkable Averages: Some remarkable , averages were made at the English yearling sales of 1936. Blandford headed the list. Five' of his yearlings sold for 24,400gns. —an average of 4800gns. each. Blandford had 19 living foals. The 12 yearlings

by the Derby winner, Cameronian (by Pharos) averaged 1325gns. Eight by Dastur (son of Solaria) averaged 1706 gns. Fairway (leading sire) had 27 living foals. Ten of them averaged 3970gns. Foxlaw (by Son-in-Law) had 27 living foals. The 14 sold averaged 1211gns. Gainsborough (21 living foals) had an average of 1392gns. for yearlings sold. Monarch (France), a son of Tracey, had but one. yearling at the English sale, and it realised 2700 gns. There were three from Pharos (France), and they averaged 1606gns. Son-in-Law had five living foals, and the one sold brought Four by Tetratema averaged 2955gn5. The top price was the 15,000gns. paid for the colt by Fairway from Golden Hair (dam of Orwell), but 23 others made 3000gns. or over. The previous year 35 yearlings made 3000gns. and upwards, but the highest price was 8000 gns. for Inglefield, by Gainsborough out of Perce-Neige, by Neil Gow.
