How far would a trout swim in three months? Fishermen would probably hazard all sorts of answers, and all would no doubt be equally surprised to learn that a tagged trout, liberated at the Turangi Government hatchery in a stream flowing into the Tongariro River 12 miles south of Lake Taupo, was caught in Kawakawa Bay, on the north-western shore of the lake. At a very conservative estimate the trout must have travelled 40 miles during its short life of three months. The sportsman who caught it a few weeks ago at Kawakawa Bay noticed from the tag on the fish that, it was liberated at Turangi, from the Government hatchery, on October 21, 1936.
