STAVISKY AUCTION
VICTIMS’ JEWELS ON SALE BAYONNE, October 29. •The auction opened here to-day of the jewels deposited at the Bayonne Municipal Pawnshop by the victims of Alexandre Serge Stavisky, the swindler who committed suicide at Chamonix on January 8, 1934. Bidding was brisk. Buyers and experts from far afield attended, and the sale had to be held in the town hall so as to accommodate the crowds and display the jewellery to advantage. At the close of to-day’s auction it was. plain that the final sum realised would be considerably above the
prices for which the jewellery had been pledged.’ Whereas the entire lots had been pawned for £3,500, today’s sale alone realised £3,300 for one single lot of eight gems. They were bought by a group of jewellers.
