DISTRESSED AREAS
TRANSFER SCHEME APPROVED [BRITISH OFFICIAL WIRELESS] RUGBY, December 18. A new scheme for the transfer of elderly unemployed men with families of adolescents from the special areas of Britain to near the industrial areas of the Midlands and Southern England, where there are better prospects of work, has been approved by the special commissioner, and in conjunction with the Land Settlement Association. As an initial step, 250 cottage homesteads, each consisting of a single detached house and half an acre of land, will be made available for transferees at rentals of about 10/6 a week. The scheme will be financed out of the special areas fund, and the immediate cost will be about £125,000. The association will train the occupiers in the proper use of land, and supervise their work. It is hoped that younger members of the families will find work in the neighbourhood.
