LABOUR’S LEFT WING
SMALL PARTIES TO MERGE. [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] LONDON, December 19. The “Daily Herald” says'-that after many discussions a joint document has been officially signed by the leaders of the Communist Party, the Independent Labour Party, and the Socialist League—Mr. Harry Pollitt, Mr. James Maxton, and Sir Stafford Cripps, creating a" united Left front for the purpose of opposing the official Labour Party and the Government and resisting Fascism. Other objects, according to the ‘NewsChronicle,” include unrelenting opposition to the new unemployment regulations, and the means test, and the speedy establishment of a Socialist State.
All three bodies, it is stated, will maintain their existing independent identity, but it remains to be seen whethej the new alignment will be endorsed by the individual members of tho three bodies., If it is, the “News-Chronicle” expresses the opinion that it may have an important effect on tho future of British politics. The “Daily Herald” predicts that the first result will almost certainly be a serious split in the Socialist League, which contains many loyal members of. the Labour party. '
