CHASTISED WIFE’S SUICIDE
QUARREL OVER DANCING. LONDON, October 27. A husband described at an inquest at Dunstable yesterday how he smacked his wife during a quarrel about her passion for dancing, and a few hours later found her gassed. The inquest was on Linda. May Cole, 27. wife of Charles Cole, a racing cyclist. “My wife was very fond of dancing 'and 1 objected to her going so often,” he said. "We quarrelled about this on Saturday night. I pulled her coat off and smacked her. The same thing happened only two days previously.” The coroner (Mr. G. J. Al. Whyley): Did you give her a thrashing?—No. I smacked her, that was all. Dr. J. C. Watson said that there were bruises on the woman’s face, body, arms and legs. Recording a verdict of suicide while of unsound mind, the Coroner said: “It is not for me to go into the question of this woman’s desire to go dancing against her husband’s wishes. It is not for me to say whether he was justified in using violence. But it seems there was provocation.”
