SHOW GIRL LEFT TO DIE Chicago’s “Phantom Hotel Killer" is suspected of having attempted to strangle a lovely brunette show girl, Alda Deery, who was found in her room at a hotel in Chicago, recently, ,with a silk stocking bound tightly round her throat. The “phantom killer” had already claimed five victims in five months. The girl had been struck on the head with a brick, and left to die from strangulation. Her dress had been ripped from her body. Four, hours later a middle-aged man, described as a rug salesman was shot, and killed three floors above in the same hotel. The police, however, declare there is no connection between the two crimes.
Miss Deery was taken to hospital, where, through bruised lips, she told a halting story of how she,had spent an evening at a wild party, accompanied by a “darling chap whom I’ve known for five years.” She refused to give any other indication of her companion’s identity. - The girl owes her life to a fire
which .accidentally started in a cupboard from a cigarette carelessly cast aside by her attacker. Another girl smelt the smoke and entered the room. ?
