MONTHLY MEETING I . I [OUR OW2T.CORRESPONDENT.] | HOKITIKA. October 10. I The Hokitika Borough Council met yesterday. Present: Crs. H. L. Michel (Deputy'Mayor), A. H. Thompson, G.l Heinz. E. Teichelmann. T. W. Duff, A.I R. Elcock. H. T. Parry. E. L. Park. An; apology for absence was received, from the Mayor. Mr. G. A. Perry. Messrs Park and Murdoch, applied! fcr consent to transfer of lease of Municipal Res. No. 575, from G. G. Wright to Bruce Alexander Morton McKenzie as from June. 25, 1936.— Granted. New Zealand Refrigerating Co., advised the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika during the month of September. 1936, viz.,— 122 sheep. . . . The Secretary, Westland Provincial Organisation (N.Z. Centennial 1940) wrote advising that in connection with the Centennial Celebrations. it was suggested to create a Centennial Fund to establish scholarships in “Mineralogy Silviculture." and Agriculture, for West Coast students, and in the interim, the executive is to report on proposals to carry out the raising of the fund to provide the capital sum required, which it is estimated, should not be less than £l.500, and asking local bodies to submit early any proposals in regard to raising funds for the purpose in the respective districts. —Agreed. The Inspector of Stock, Greymouth, wrote asking for a list of weeds declared “noxious” by this Council, and also the names of any weeds declared ‘•not noxious.” The Mayor, Runanga. wrote asking for support in regard to the construction of a deep-sea harbour at Point Elizabeth. Hon. Secretary, Blackball Combined Picnic Committee, applied for use of Cass Square for the annual picnic on Saturday, February 6 next.—Approved. All Saints’ Church Committee, wrote asking that the mud along the street frontage of the new church be cleaned up.—Referred to Foreman. All Saints Church Committee wrote inviting Councillors to attend unveiling service of the Memorial Tablet at the new Church on Sunday, November 1. next, and also inviting Council to select two representatives from Council for the Consecration Service at 10.30 a.m. on the same day. The Secretary. N.Z. Labour Party. Hokitika, advised that they had obtained consent from the Druids Lodge, to hold meetings in the Lodge Room, and asking for the Council’s approval of this arrangement. Agreed. The Director-General. G.P.0., Wellington, wrote furnishing particulars of Health Stamp Campaign, and asking (1) That Council give permission to any local Health Camp Committee to hold a street day collection, and (2) That the Council assist by using Health Stamps on all correspondence for a period, or by giving a donation. (1) Granted, (2) Decided to buy, £2 worth. Stewart, Johnson, Hough, and Campbell forwarded interest £l9 10/- in regard to W. .1. Butler bequest. The Secretary, Hokitika Fire Board, iorwarded resolution passed by Board at its last meeting, asking that the Council, in framing any new' by-laws, insert a clause that all new buildings or those which are reconstructed within the business area of Hokitika, have a Din brick wall erected between the buildings.

1 he District Engineer, New Zealand Railways, advised that the Departmen is erecting a five-ton gantry at the Hokitika Station yard, and asking for permission to project a stay for a distance of 6ft. on to Fitzherbert Street. — Permission granted'.

The Secretary of the Westland Hospital Board sent notification under section 75 (3) of the Hospital and Charitable Institutions Act, 1926, that it has been necessary to increase the original amount of the estimate for tlie erection of the Nurses’ Home from £7,000 to £9,000.

The Secretary of the Department of Labour advised that the Employment Department will make available from the Employment Promotion Fund a subsidy at the rate of 12 per cent, of the total cost, of the contract for the Hokitika water supply scheme, conditional upon SO per cent, of the contractors’ labour being engaged from the register of eligible unemployed, and the Borough or the contractor to have the right of selection of the men.

The South Island Travel Association forwarded a copy of the report of the deputation which waited upon the Ministers of Tourist and Railways E< partments, and pointing out the necessity of financial assistance from local bodies.

G. and D. Davidson, Ltd., wrote surrendering lease and a plying for new lease.—Granted.

Re tiie rubbish dump. Or. Thompson suggested the council colect all rubb’sh and convey it to the dump. Or. Michel said the rubbish nuisance was becom’ng a menace in the town. — It was decided that, the Works Committee go into the matter and report for next meeting.

The Deputy Mayor and Cr. Park were appointed to represent the Council at the consecration of All Sainis Church

Re building by-laws, it was resolved that Cr. Elcock and the Town Clerk frame suitable by-laws for the Council’s approval. Cr. Michel said that it was high lime action was taken in this direction, particularly as conditions were at present a person could build anything anyhow in the main street as long as it complied with the Health Act.

The Finance Committee’s report showed receipts £3083/5/4, expenditure £lOl7/17/3: District Fund Account Credit Balance £765/18/9. Accounts amoutning to £1770/10/3 were passed for payment. The Abbatoir Report stated: Stock slaughtered for month —22 cows, 32 heifers, 11 calves, 59 bullocks. 236 sheep, 18 pigs. Condemned, 2 cows and 1 pig. Fees for month, £64/5/6. Fees for corresponding month last vear, £67/10/6. The foreman’s report was read and approved. He reported the complet'd! of the repairs to pipes destroyed near Lake Kanieri. Tests had proved satisfactory. Cr. Thompson raised the question of river protection along Gibson’s Quay, between Brittan Street and Fitzherbert Street. A notice of motion is to be brought before the next meeting. I
