MONTHLY MEETING

HOKITIKA, August 15

The Council met last evening: Present: The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Perry), Crs. H. T. Parry, G. Heinz, E. L. Park, T. W. Duff, E. Teichelmann, A. I. Elcock, H. L. Michel. Apologies were received from Crs. J. King and H. A. Thompson. The Foreman’s report was read and approved., x N.Z. Refrigerating Co., Christchurch, advised that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika during the month of July, 1936., viz., 188 sheep, 2 cattle. The Hokitika School Committee wrote asking taht Council take steps to have speeding by motorists checked when approaching the school. —Referred to Inspector.

The Rugby Football Sub.-Union wrote asking that Council take steps gates in Cass Square on Stafford St., be removed to a position in Bealey Street, between the pavilion and the copper shed, and pointing out the advantage to be gained by the alteration.—Reserves Committee to repoll. G. Kelly, Weld Street, asked that the footpath along his frontage on the south side of Weld Street, from his residence to the corner of Davie Street, be formed and that a street crossing to give access to his residence be provided. —Footpath approved. Applicant to pay half cost. Miss B. Archer, Bealey Street, wrote asking under what conditions the Council would tar-seal the frontage of her residence in Bealey.—Applicant to pay half cost. C. T. Cowie wrote drawing attention to the unsatisfactory condition of the public drain in Brittan Street, between Hampden and Park Streets, and asking that the matter be attended to. —Works Committee to report. Westland Power Ltd., wrote suggesting that the electric light supplied at the abattoirs and the slaughterman’s cottage be metered separately, and that the Council pay the minimum of 16/8 per month nett, or £lO per annum, and that the occupier of the slaughterman’s house be dealt with as a separate consumer. —Agreed to. A. R. Elcock (as agent) applied for consent to sub-division of plan respecting Sections 1019, 1020 and 1021, Hampden Street.— Approved. The Financial Statement showed receipts for July £374/11/3; expenditure £1,102/1/7. Balance district fund account £1,340/7/-. Accounts amounting to £1,144/7/3 were passed for payment.

The abattoirs report stated: Stock slaughtered during month of July: — 36 cows, 39 heifers, 63 bullocks, 23 calves, 271 sheep, 9 pigs. Condemned: One sheep. Fees collected for month amounted to £74/14/6. It was decided to leave to the Works Committee the question of employing the grader on the streets when and. where necessary.

It was decided to write the Napier Council requesting information as to that Council’s activities with regard to tuberculosis in dairy herds and inspection of those supplying milk for human consumption. With regard to the offal contract, the Refrigerating Company had dedined to renew the contract but had made an offer which was acceptable to the local master-butchers and the Council—Offer accepted. Small repairs to the abattoirs building were approved. - Authority was granted for calling tenders for reserves. On the recommendation of the caretaker a new ladder was approved for the town clock.
