EXPENDITURE NEEDS REVENUE

Public accounts for three mouths ended June 30 are published in the “Gazette” to-day.

Revenue for the period totalled £5,523,634, compared with £4,921,775 in the corresponding period of the corresponding period of the previous year. Expenditure totalled £5,859,902, compared with £5,391,779 in the corresponding period of the previous year. The taxation yield was- £4,768,99'), interest £495,565, other receipts £259,079, total £5,523,634.

Expenditure: Permanent appropriations debt service £2,009,664. Exchange £595,462, under special acts £826,344, total £3.431,470, annual appropriations, and social services £1,591,305, other services £837,127. Total annual, £2,428,432. Total expenditure £5,959,902.

Compared with the first quarter of last vottfs on the revenue side, Custom’s duty increased from £1,814,442 In 1935, to £'2,184,008 this year. Beer duty increased from £ 149,653 to £176,041, sales tax from £582,039 to £709,240, highways from £525,240 to £643,694, stamp and death duties from £524,044 to £785,162. Income tax decreased from £247,977, to £213,052. Interest fell from £530,682 to £495,564.

On the expenditure side, debt services decreased from £2,205,196 to £2,009,664. Highways increased from £222,850 to £645,281. Defence increased from £102,745 to £124,610. Social ’ services increased from £1,470,930 to £1,591,304.
