PRISONERS SENTENCED

GISBORNE, August 12

Leniency was extended to four prisoners, who appeared for sentence before Mr. Justice Blair, at the Supreme Court, this morning. Tahati Poki, found guilty of assault on a girl, was sentenced to one month’s gaol, His Honor remarking that a previous term of probation had been ineffective.

For attempted carnal knowledge, Sam Waikare received 12 months’ probation. For breaking and entering and theft, Pinihi Te Puni was placed on three years’ probation. For bigamy, Leslie Henry Hanger, was placed on 12 months’ probation. He had not heard from his wife for ten years, and had not received replies to his letters. There were unusual circumstances, said the Judge, and probation was justified.
