THREAT TO ROGERS’ WIDOW
BID TO EXTORT £2OO LOS ANGELES, June 23. Joseph Snyder, a 76-year-old ex-cow-boy, who was recently taken in custody, has been handed over to the Federal authorities in connection with an alleged attempt to extort I.ooo' dollars (£200) by threats from the widow of the late Will Rogers. Snyder is alleged to have written a letter to Mrs. Rogers purporting to expose her husband as a “cattle-rust-ler” (cattle thief). Questioned here to-day, he is alleged to have said that he knew the late Will Rogers very well in Oklahoma from 1889-1898, and had written a manuscript dealing with Rogers’ cattle rustling activities. All he had done was to say he would have the story published unless Mrs. Rogers bought it from him. He is alleged to have written her a letter saying: “Rogers started stealing cattle, for which he was notorious, in 1892.” That year Will Rogers was only 13 years old.—Reuter.
