BOROUGH RATES

[to the editor.] Sir,—Kindly give me a little space to express my opinion on the borough estimates. I think that Mr. Boustridge was quite right about the Council drawing in their horns a little bit. They should not be allowed to spend more than they get in. I wonder what some of them would say if people went into some of their shops and earned away as much goods as they could, without paying for it. They would get a bit of blue paper. I see in the “Star” where the Council have over £lO,OOO in outstanding rates and that they intend to get £4,500 during the current year. If they 'are so sure oi getting it, why put up the rates? How do they expect a man with a family to keep them decent and respectable, on a small wage, and still the rates go up. I think that we are paying through the nose already, but of course it is the payer that has to pay for the non-payer. Let them be whatever they like, they have a good right to pay and not wait until they mount up to hundreds. How about giving some of the Councillors their running shoes?—I am, etc., RATEPAYER.
