BUTTER PRICES REDUCED
fPEK PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
CHRISTCHURCH, August 10
A reduction of 2d per lb has been made in all butter sold in Christchurch. This has been done to bring local- prices more into conformity with the Government’s guaranteed price. A reduction has already been made in Auckland, and it will take effect today in Wellington and throughout Otago. Factories have taken this step pending information from the Government about its intentions as to controlling local prices. It is explained that if factories which sell only on the local market were to hold to a price much above the guaranteed rate they would have an advantage over those factories which export. If the Government has no plans about controlling local prices, it is possible that the price will be further reduced. First-grade butter will uoav retail at 1/3 in Christchurch and second-grade at 1/21.
