OPERA HOUSE. “The Payoff,” the latest newspaper drama, comes to the Opera House tonight, with a tri-star cast, including James Dunn, Claire Dodd and Patricia Ellis. The picture is entirely different from its predecesors in the newpaper field, centring about the activities of on honest sports writer, his contact with the gambling fraternity, and his love affairs, which, incidentally, furnish a new twist to the triangular romance. The picture depicts all the thrills and glamour and excitement in the work of a reporter constantly threatened by gamblers. James Dunn has the role of the sports writer, Claire Dodd is the selfish wife, and Patricia Ellis a newspaper woman in love with him. punn is fired when he ceases in his Attack on the ace gambler, played by Alan Dinehart, and is practically down and out when Fraukie Darro, as a jockey whom he had befriended, tips him off to a frame-up in the big race of the season. “MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY.”

How she attempts to save her husband and baby from scandal and disgrace forms the basis of this gripping photoplay Harold Young directed.

“SILK HAT KlD’’ THURSDAY Fast-moving dramatic action along w *th a dangerous romance makes Silk Hat Kid,’’ which starts on Thursday at the Regent, one of the most powerful and daring films ever presented. A new Lew Ayres in a role that ideally fits his ability, is revealed in his portrayal of a fastthlnking, jtwo-fisted bodyguard. Paul Keyy, owner of a cafe in the perilous slums of a big city, hires Ayres to protect him from racketeers. Ayres falls in love with Mae Clarke, Kelly’s girl friend, and rivalry results. Both men hate each other, and gunplay appears to be the only way out. But at this point, the film takes on such thrilling drama that it keeps audiences highly entertained. “GENTLEMEN~OF THE NAVY’’ Sir Guy Standing and Richard Cromwell, are united in “Gentlemen of .the Navy,’’ a dramatic naval story film.ei-.in the.. The bazaar conducted in aid of the Cobden Home and School Association, on Friday and Saturday, proved most successful, approximately £7O being raised as a result of the effort.
