ITEMS IN ESTIMATES

A FURTHER SERIES. The list includes a compassionate grant of £6OO to the former manager of the Chateau Tongariro, Mr. R. Cobbe, for injuries sustained during the performance of his duties. Another recipient of a compassionate grant was the daughter of the late Mrs. E. R. McCombs, M.P. The amount in her case was 411 10/-. The expenses of a delegate to the Sanctions Co-ordination Committee at Geneva are covered by an amount of £219 15/5, and there is an additional grant of £350 to cover (he extra cost involved through the longer stay in England last year and his return, via America, of the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates and his private secretary. The cost of passage and expenses of the Director of Horticulture visiting Australia with the Fruit Export Control Board delegation to confer with the Australian Fruit Council regarding the export of apples and pears to England is represented by an amount of £53 14/-. There is a sum of £365 12/6 in connection -with the cost of passages to Sydney and portion of the bursaries for students selected for veterinary scholarships at the Sydney University Veterinary School.

There was a grant of £4OO to Professor W. Riddet to meet a portion of the cost of expenses of his visit to England and America in connection with dairy research, and another of £BO to Dr. E. Marsden, Secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, to cover the cost of his travelling expenses on a recent visit to Australia on departmental business.

A tour of the South Island by Mr. W. Jordan, M.P., and Mrs. Jordan is responsible for a grant of £97 16/6.
