There is undoubtedly romance in big business, and it cannot be denied that the A.M.P. Society have chosen an appropriate title for their booklet reviewing the birth and growth of the largest mutual life assurance society in the Southern Hemisphere, “A Business Romance.” It is a story of remarkable and continued progress from the year 1849, when the Society was inaugurated in a tiny office in Sydney to the present day, when it has over one hundred million pounds of assets. Not the least interesting feature of the publication is a table showing, year by year, the growth of the funds, from £96 in 1849 to £98,166,603 in 1935. In the same period the premiums paid have increased from £258 to £8,316,184, and the interest earned bn the funds from nothing to £4,285,438. The booklet traces the progress of the Society through the important decisions of the directorate and these, particularly in the early stages of its development, make interesting reading.
