COCKROACHES
WATER BOARD DECLARES WAR.
SYDNEY, July 30.
One ton of cockroach poison!
This is an order "which has been given to a city firm by the Water Board.
Suburban councils, who have received many complaints about the invasion of cockroaches, allegedly from sewers, will, it is considered, -be pleased to learri that the board intends to intensify its war on these highly specialised black insects.
It is stated that the poison to be used is the best available. For some time past experiments with various poisons have been in progress. Men will climb down manholes and plaster the inside of the sewers and shafts with the poisonous paste. Water Board officers, however, resent the suggestion that cockroaches which have worried householders recently have come from the sewers. They claim that the environment of a sewer, with its supply of food, warmth, and darkness, is ideal for these creatures, and nothing will induce them to forsake such comfortable quarters. The cost of the poison will be £lO2.
