items from the estimates. The following are among the items included in the Estimates, pi esented, this week, to Parliament: — Improvements to Ministerial residences and for other buildings in ■Wellington is represented by £3OOO. ■Work on the Parliamentary Buildings is to cost £5OOO. This includes £4OO for painting the chambers, £2500 for making the roofs waterlight; and £2OOO for general works and maintenance.
An amount of £85,000 is included as a contribution for flic development of State forests.
Advertising in the special New Zealand supplement of the London “Daily Telegraph” cost £3OOO, and advertising in the United Kingdom cost £4OOO.
An amount of £20,00.0 is set aside for assisting to locate new gold reefs and in developing mining propositions.
The sum of £156,000 is included for incidental expenses of school committees. This is to provide increased funds for school committees, including a special provision of £16,000 for improvements to school grounds.
The sum of £412 is included as part of a compassionate grant to the widow of the late Mr P. A. de la Perrelle, M.P. for Awarua. To provide- official postage stamps to members of both Houses will cost the country £2406. Stamps are issued up to the value of £2 a month to members of the House of Representatives and’ to £1 a month to members of the Legislative Council. The printing of Hansard win cost £6500 this year, according to the Government’s estimate. This is £2836 in excess of the amount expended last year.
To provide for extra charwomen during a session of six and a-half months instead of a session of two months will mean an additional £1402 — £2235, compared with £833.
That Parliamentary institution, Bellamy’s, is a charge on the country to the extent of £7407. The aiSiount expended last year was £3798, the longer session accounting for the anticipated increase. Tho hire of motor-cars for the Speakers of both Houses and their wives, is provided for to the extent of £25. The provision cost only £l6 last year. There is an increase of £6391 in railway passes and concessions to members and’ ex-members of the Legislature, families, relations, etc. The cost of freight and the erection of New Zealand timber for panelling the League of Nations building at. Geneva cost £450. Other items dealing with the League of Nations are: Expense of delegate to Geneva, £800; grant to officer to cover cost of visit to League of Nations at Geneva, £1000; New Zealand’s proportion of Secretariat expenses for year ending December last, £19,020. New Zealand’s share of the cost of the Ellsworth Relief Expedition was £2OOO.
The allowance to police and other officers acting as Labour Department agents has increased from £937 to £lO5O, the extra amount representing
increased inspection activities
The expenses of the New Zealand delegation to the International Labour Conference at Geneva cost £2150, which represents the expenses in respect, to all delegates. Under the heading of military aviation, there is an item of £7350 for ammunition, bombs, and other explosives. This, it is stated, provides for the commencement of a reserve supply of bombs for aircraft and for machine-gun ammunition for aeroplanes.
ANNUITIES. There is provision for an annuity o£ 1150 to the daughter of the late Sir W. Fraser and £2OO to Lady Salmend. Other special annuities are: — The wile of the late Hon. J.
