OPERA HOUSE. With the coining of every Buchanan picture the public are on' tip-toe for some new, real song hits, and they will not be disappointed in Jack s latest success “When Knights Were Bold’’ which will be presented at the Opera House to-night. Two of the numbers “I’m Still Dreaming,’ and “Let’s Put Some People to Work, sung in Jack’s own inimitable breezy style, are destined to be instant favourites. “When Knights Were Bold gives an intimate glimpse of Buchanan's favourite style of acting, as the producers gave him free rein in selecting the story for this production, and he has indeed chosen a mirthful mix-up, brimful of laughs, funny situations, spicy interludes and catchy songs, that spells popular entertainment with a capital ‘ L.

“THE PAYOFF.” “The Payoff,” latest newspaper drama, comes to the Opera House on Monday and Tuesday, with a tri-star cast, including James Dunn, Claiie Dodd and Patricia Ellis. The picture is entirely different from its predecessors in the newspaper field, centring about the activities of an honest sports writer, his contact w> h the gambling fraternity, and his love at fairs, which incidentally furnish a new twist to the triangular romance The picture depicts all the tin ills and glamour* and excitement in the worn of a reporter constantly threatened by gamblers. James Dunn has_the role of the sports writer. Claire Dodd is the selfish wife, and Patricia Ellis a newspaper woman m love with him. Dunn is tired when he ceases m his iattack on the ace gambler, played bj Alan Dinehart, and is practicallj down and out when Frankie Darro as a jockey whom he had befriendec, tips him off to a frame-up in the big race of the season.

REGENT THEATRE. “13 Hours by Air.” a dramatic story of romance and intrigue aboard a speeding transport plane, will be shown at the Regent to-night. Fr«l Mac Murray and Joan Bennett play the leading roles for all they are worth. The leads are supported by a big. capable cast, including Zasu Pitts John Howard, Bennie Bartlett, Grace Bradley. Alan Baxter, Brian Donlevy, Ruth Donnelly, an Fred Keating. “13 Hours by Air is a dramatic chronicle of the adventures that befall half-a-dozen passengers and the crew of a transport plane as it zooms from New York to San Francisco. Mac Murray and Howard are co-pilots. Miss Bennett is the lovely passenger, who intrigues MacMurray. Bennie Bartlett is a spoiled voting heir to several million dollars, who makes life miserable for his governess,. Zasu Pitts and the passengers. Three mysterious male passengers are aboard, Baxter, Donlew and Keating. Mac Murray concentrates on protecting Miss Bennett, whom he believes in danger, and danger comes for everyone in the plane. There is an attempted kidnapping, fast gun-play, a forced landing, and a series of other exciting developments. How the plot is finally resolved brings the film to a thrilling climax. March of Time, No. 3, will also be screened. March of Time, which has become so popular at this theatre, is looked forward to by not only its own patrons, but all theatre-goers. No. 3, which Will be shown to-night and Monday, shows the Croix d'e Feu, the French Fascist organisation (this lately broke into the headlines, and is likely to remain there, as the Fascists in France are likely to cause trouble with the newly-elected Government.) Russia —Progress of the Five-Year Plan (a thought provoking sequence of wide interest.)

GLADSTONE HALL. The usual dance .will be held in the Gladstone Hall to-night, the Mayfair Orchestra supplying the music. The floor is in splendid order, and an enjoyable evening is assured. Supper will be served at 11.30. SCHAEF’S DANCE. Lovers of dancing are reminded that to-night at Schaef’s Hall, the usual Saturday night dance will be in full swing, and a good time is assured to all patrons. Music by the Royal Star Dance Band.
